“Alpha, I was wrong! Please, let me go!” he sobbed, his forehead hitting the hardwood floor. “I’ll never dare again. I was forced into this! My family… they threatened my family!”
The traitor – the black market manager who sold out information to other packs – banged his forehead against the hardwood.
Thud.
Thud.
I didn’t even glance at him.
“From the day you followed me, didn’t I tell you?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “If you ever wanted out, you could leave. There are other packs out there, I’d even give you enough money to vanish comfortably. I promised I’d never come after you. Didn’t I?”
The man’s body jolted as he nodded frantically, tears splashing onto the floorboards. “Yes, Alpha. You’ve always been good to us. You’re the most generous Alpha…”
“Since that’s the case,” I interrupted, “what reason did you have to betray me? You’ve been selling information to other packs, you’ve lived under my protection. Do you think your family would be harmed in my pack? How dare you question my security”

a stranger… Now you pay for it. You know how I treat traitors.” I gestured vaguely “You made your choice when you opened up toward the door. “Take him down. I, hereby banish you from the Blackridge pack and you would never be allowed in any other pack.”
The words landed, making him scream. “No! Please, don’t! ALPHA, I was wrong! PLEASE!”
The guards stepped forward and gagged him mid–shriek, the sound dying into a muffled grunt as they dragged him across the floor.
It was at that very moment that the heavy double doors swung open.
I noticed Sean and Susie.
How could I have missed their scent?
The two children froze as their eyes went wide.
“Daddy, what’s going on?” Susie’s voice was small, trembling with fear.
I had always been careful to keep the part of myself away from them and the sudden glimpse of the monster I am left them visibly unsettled.
Sean reacted with a speed, instantly reaching up, covering Susie’s eyes with his small hand, shielding her from the sight of the struggling traitor. But his own gaze stayed fixed on me.

I shot to my feet, the chair scraping back with a harsh rasp.

“Who let them in?” I roared, “whoever’s on duty today, line up and take your punishment. My study is not a playground!!
The guards near the door trembled but they kept their silence, bowing their heads in anticipation of their punishment.
“Daddy, it was us,” Sean spoke up, his voice remarkably steady for a boy his age.
He stepped further into the room, still keeping his hand over Susie’s face. “We came on our own, please don’t blame them.”
I felt a headache blooming behind my eyes. I strode forward, looking at his scared face. “Stay out of my business. What are you doing here?”
I didn’t wait for an answer as I reached down and scooped them both up and carried them out of the room.
Sean’s hand never left Susie’s eyes. He held it there with a grim determination, ensuring she didn’t see the bloodstains on the floor.
Susie, however, wasn’t having it. She wriggled in my grip, her lips pursed in frustration.
“Daddy,” she piped up, her voice muffled against my suit jacket, “did you know Mom’s name is ‘the keeper?”
I nearly stumbled.
My foot caught on the edge of the hallway carpet, and I had to tighten my grip to keep from dropping them both.
“Daddy, careful! If you can’t hold us, just put us down,” Sean said, patting my chest with a lingering sense of alarm. “You’re getting
old.”
My mouth twitched. Old? I was in my prime, but the sheer shock of Susie’s question had knocked the wind out of me. I set them down outside the study doors.
I knelt down so I was at eye level with them, studying Susie’s innocent gaze.
A jolt of cold realization hit me: I didn’t know this sweet little daughter of mine as well as I thought.
“How do you know about your mommy’s identity?” I asked, my voice low. “Who told you?”
Natalie’s secret was guarded more fiercely than my own bank accounts,
Even Yvonne hadn’t been told the full extent of the “Keeper” legacy. How did a child learn the most guarded secret in the pack?
Susie fiddled with her fingers, her eyes darting everywhere except my face.
She was clearly scrambling for an excuse, her little brain working too hard for her age.
I reached out and flicked her forehead gently. “Little one, already trying to play tricks on Daddy? Be honest. I can smell a lie from a mile away.”
“Ow!” Susie pouted, rubbing the spot on her forehead, looking properly aggrieved. “That hurt, Daddy!”
Sean stepped forward at once, puffing out his chest and standing between me and his sister. “Don’t bully Susie, Daddy, if you do, I’ll tell Mommy. I’ll tell her you were being a meanie in your office with that man.”
My eyes widened. “Sean! Do you even hear yourself? What kind of child says that to his father?”
