Standing in the room, watching the digital confirmation of my reclaimed designs, I felt a lightness I never thought was possible

But as the relief washed over me, a different kind of heat began to fill the room.

Baron stepped closer, the scent of him; dark oak, rain–drenched earth filled the air around me, causing a shiver down my spine.

His eyes were burning with a look that made my breath hitch.

“So you can’t ever leave me!” he said, his voice dropping into that low tone I loved.

He leaned forward, his large frame casting a shadow over me, his arms reaching out as if to finally pull me into his territory.

My heart hammered in my chest, but I wasn’t ready.

Not for this.

As much as I would love to have him again… I couldn’t.

The scars on my back still felt like a reminder, pulsating at the thought.

I dodged out of his reach, stepping behind a velvet armchair. “My body hasn’t fully recovered yet, Baron. Don’t touch me like that… I won’t be able to stop myself.”

I bit my lip, trying to find the right words that wouldn’t shatter the connection between us. “And I did say I’d consider being with you, but you have to give me time.”

Baron’s face fell instantly but his eyes glowed yellow, a telltale sign that his wolf was present.

The sudden shift was jarring; from the chill looking Alpha to a man looking like he just lost his puppy.

“Don’t tell me you still expect us to sleep in separate rooms,” he said, his voice laced with wounded disbelief.

I blinked, my cheeks starting to burn with heat. “Isn’t that normal? We aren’t… we aren’t at that stage yet.”

His voice grew pitiful, a masterclass in emotional manipulation that I knew I should resist, yet found myself softening toward. “You’re throwing me out? I’ve been finding it hard to sleep… my wolf needs his mate.” He said looking at me closely as if to get my reaction.

And he did.

Mate? I don’t have a wolf… I don’t feel the mate bond.

And the only man I’d considered my mate betrayed me and chose my sister over me.

Was he serious? Was I really his mate? I do feel the butterflies whenever he touches me but the spark never came though.

But I didn’t feel that with Jensen either. Is that-

“How will that look to the kids, Natalie? What kind of pack dynamic are we showing them?” He said, interrupting my thoughts.

I paused, the image of Susie and Sean flashing in my mind.

“They’re still little,” I argued, though I felt his gaze stirring something within me. “There’s no need to explain the complexities of adult sleeping arrangements to them.”

He was trying to manipulate me but I really didn’t mind… but I wouldn’t let it go so easily.

“They’re not that little,” Baron countered, stepping around the chair to close the distance again. “They’re about to start preschool and they’re going to be around other pups from the elite packs. What if they ask me why all their classmates‘ parents share a room, but their daddy and mommy sleep behind different locked doors? What am I supposed to say? That their mother doesn’t trust their father?”

I opened my mouth, but the words died in my throat. I have to admit… he was not giving up. “Would they… would they really ask something like that?” I asked, trying to fake being convinced.

Baron didn’t answer with words… he only gave me a long, wounded look.

“But us being together without any status…” I whispered, looking at the floor. “That’s not right either… In the eyes of the Pack Council, I’m just a guest. A stray.”

I’ve learned enough from Jensen… if he wanted me then he’ll have to put a title on it.

And besides, I really want to be with him.

He saved me and gave me a home when I thought I never would have one.

“Then give me a status,” he snapped, “I can mark you as my Luna, right now. The elders are on call, my wolf wants you Natalie.” he said looking at me dead in the eyes.

“I want you,” he said. Holding my hands now.

I froze, the air leaving my lungs. “You mean, right now?”

“Of course,” he pressed on, his eyes burning with a fierce light. “I know you’re my mate, Natalie… you might not feel it but Raze and I do, and besides we already have two children, Natalie.”

My lips parted, but I no words came out.

Raze was his wolf’s name…

He wasn’t wrong… we were already a family.

But right now? Do I really want him as my mate?

Every part of me is screaming yes… even my mind was filled with jumbled voices from the earth.
