Today was the day Baron and I officially went to meet the council and other leaders of the neighboring pack.

No matter what happened in the war to come, this was a milestone worth remembering.

It was the first time in my life I was meeting the elders of a pack without being a victim or being punished.

“Let’s all go out for the pack dinner.” My words made Baron pause in surprise.

He stayed frozen by the door of our suite, eyes wide with a flicker of disbelief.

He sounded like he wasn’t quite sure if he’d heard me right.

I looked at him and nodded, a small smile playing on my lips. “Why not? Or is there some reason you don’t want to be seen with your mate?”

“No! None at all… I’ll arrange for that right now.” Baron spoke quickly, the corners of his lips lifting in a way that made my chest ache.

I stilled.

Baron froze for a moment, his gaze searching mine. “So you’ve decided to let him know you’re alive?”

“It’s time for me to come back, Baron.” I smiled and slid my arm through his. “We announced our mating ceremony today. Shouldn’t we celebrate?”

I leaned in and brushed a kiss against his cheek. That light, fleeting touch made his whole body lock up as if he’d been struck by lightning.

“What? Can’t I kiss you? Mate?”

When I said that word, I felt the blood in Baron’s veins boil.

I could feel the heat radiating off him as he cupped my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes, his voice dropping into a hoarse growl that vibrated through my very bones.

“Do you even realize what you just said, Luna?”

“Of course. Alpha, I’ll be in your care from now on. But if you ever become like Jensen, if you ever betray me, I’ll walk away without a second thought.”

“You’ll never live to see that day,” he promised, his voice a vow.

He grabbed the back of my head, his fingers tangling in my hair, and crushed his lips down onto mine.

It was a hot, demanding kiss that stole the very breath from my lungs.

Heat curled low in my stomach, stealing the air from my lungs.

I clutched at him, caught between wanting more… and knowing I shouldn’t.

I let him take my breath, let his passion consume me until we were both gasping for air.

“No way!” I wriggled free from under his arm, and bolted out of the room toward the hall.

As I descended the stairs, the low hum of voices from the Great Hall began to swell into a

roar.

Baron caught up to me at the landing, his hand finding the small of my back, guiding me with a possessive heat that I finally didn’t want to shy away from.

The double doors swung open, and the sound hit me like a physical wave.
