Every time I breathed, the scent of my own charred flesh seemed to cling to the back of my throat. A reminder that I was just an Alpha by name.
I stared at the heavy white bandages where iny finger should have been.
You deserve to bleed, a voice snarled, deep and jagged, in the back of my mind. It was Cairn, my wolf.
He was pacing in a circle in the dark corners of my consciousness, mocking me.
Cairn had been present but refused to help… he’d rather I crumble than help me get back my pack.
‘Look at you… an Alpha with a broken hand. Now, you are fading, Jensen. We are becoming nothing.
“Shut up, Cairn,” I rasped, the words catching in my dry throat. ‘If you’re not helping, then get the fuck out of my head.‘
‘I will not… you deserve everything you’re getting. You had the True Keeper in your hands and let her go. Now, she came back for you. She’ll ruin you and I’ll be there to help her.
Hansel stepped into the room, his face a mask of indifference. He looked at me with pity, and it made Cairn laugh
My wolf was taunting me… and soon enough, I’d be stripped of my title as Alpha.
“Alpha,” Hansel started, “the

be found… And now, the news has spread across the pack.”
My heart hammered against my ribs, “that means she was there. She made the announcement herself Hansel. She’s alive.”
“Sir, logically, the fire-” Hansel started again but I cut him off.
“Logic didn’t blow my finger off!” I snapped, shoving my bandaged hand toward him.
The movement sent a jolt of agony through my arm, but I welcomed it. It was the only thing that felt real. “The laptop was a trap specifically for me… only Natalie knew I’d go for that machine. She’s alive, and she’s using her designs to gut the pack from the outside.”

I looked at my phone again.
The words “The True Keeper has returned” were burned into my retinas.

“Track the Scribe who passed the information to the pack,” I whispered. “I don’t care if you have to attack every pack in the three territories. Whoever the scribe is… find her, Hansel. Find her before someone else does.”
Hansel sighed, a heavy, helpless sound.
“Alright. I’ll start the search. But Alpha… if she’s truly the one who did this to you… she doesn’t want to be found by us.”
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
I just stared at the bandages, laughing and crying in turns once he left. “Natalie… you hate me enough to take a piece of me, but you’re still here. I will find you,” I whispered.
And when I do….
I won’t make the same mistake twice.
Sharon’s POV

I stared at the same update on my phone, my breath coming in shallow hitches.
“No. No, that slut can’t be alive. Impossible! This isn’t her… it’s Jensen, it has to be!”
I paced around like a caged animal, my heels clicking a frantic rhythm on the marble floor.
My right hand; the one that had attacked began to throb.
The accident
I stopped in front of a mirror, my eyes wide and bloodshot.
I remembered that night… the night I felt my connection to the moon snap.
The night he had moved through the pack and performed the ritual that had stripped me of my soul.

I had woken up wolfless, forced to fake my power every day since.
My mind raced, stitching pieces of a nightmare together.

I had always blamed that man for attacking me out of love for Natalie. But now… looking at
that screen…
Did she send him to do it? Did Natalie send someone to take my soul? Did she watch from the shadows while I was maimed?
“Natalie… you’re saying Natalie is alive? Is it true?” A familiar annoying voice asked.
I spun around to see my mother, clinging to the doorframe.
She looked older than she was a few months ago, her skin sallow, her eyes filled with a fragile, disgusting hope.
“False!” I exploded. I lunged at her, my hands fisting into her silk collar and yanking her frail body close. “You still think of her, don’t you? The day you let me whip her, she learned to hate you! And you dare dream of fixing things now? Foolish old woman!”
I hurled her back onto the bed, watching her wheeze and cough. She was weak, failing, and yet she still pined for the “good daughter.”
“Don’t you dare look for her!” I screamed, the words dripping with venom. “Even if she crawled out of that fire, I’ll finish her myself. If she shows her face, I’ll make sure she suffers!”
