Baron slid his phone across the table.

It stopped near my hand. I didn’t pick it up immediately, I looked at the device, then at him, measuring the intent behind the gesture. Baron didn’t rush me; he leaned back in his chair instead, one draped loosely over the backrest, posture relaxed in a way that showed control.

“This.” he said calmly, “is everything Jensen is trying to erase.
“The original footage,” he continued. “The press conference, the serum results. Everything.
I finally took the phone.
The screen was dark at first. Then it lit up, files opening one after another. Video footage, audio logs, time stamps, council seals, serum reports. Even the familiar symbols I had spent years translating and cross–checking, now laid bare without encryption.
My fingers tightened slightly around the phone
“Why are you giving this to me?” I asked quietly
Baron didn’t hesitate. “Because Jensen will try again.”
The name settled into my bones like cold rain.
“And you?” I asked,

“I don’t protect people for free,” he replied evenly. “So that means you owe me.”

There was no sweetness in the statement, no sofmess, no pretending it was anything other than a transaction.
“What do you want from me?” I asked curiously
“There’s more,” he said, signaling to the phone.
I turned it on again, and the screen lit beneath my thumb.
At first, it was just movement. Blurred shapes. A shaky camera angle. Then the image sharpened, and my breath hitched.
A hospital room. The Pack Hospital.

My fingers tightened unconsciously as the scene unfolded.
Sharon was there.

She was standing near the bed, barefoot, wrappert in a thin hospital gown that hung from her shoulders. A man stood behind her, one arm locked around her chest, the other holding a knife so close to her throat that the metal gleamed against her skin.
He was unshaven, eyes wild, lips trembling as he shouted at the guards blocking the door.
“Move! Get out of the way! She’s my mate! I’m taking my wife home!”
Sharon was crying.
Not the delicate kind she used when she wanted sympathy, nor the polished tears meant for witnesses and cameras. This was raw and ugly.
“I’m not your mate!” she screamed. “I’m not! Please, I’m not! Jensen! Help me!”
Her voice cracked, sharp and high, cutting through the noise.
Quincy was on the floor, clinging to the man’s leg, sobbing, begging him not to hurt her daughter, promising money, protection, anything that would keep Sharon breathing.
The guards gathered around, unable to do anything without causing her harm.
The man waved the knife erratically. “Why are you trying to escape me? YOU ARE MY MATE” he shouted at her, then turned to the guards. “If you don’t move, I’ll die with her right here!”

“No! I don’t want to die!” Sharon wailed.
I stared at the screen.

I waited for something to rise inside me.
Maybe hatred, pity, or even satisfaction, but nothing came.
The girl who once would have shaken at the sight of Sharon crying was gone, buried somewhere beneath scars and silver marks.
I lifted my eyes slowly.
“You did this.”
Baron turned his head slightly. “Jensen forced you toward the Council station. I needed him to turn back.”

“If he cared about his bond with you,” he continued, voice low, “he wouldn’t have left you bleeding in the rain.”
I didn’t, no, couldn’t defend Jensen.
There was nothing left to defend.
I placed the phone on the table between us, then looked straight into Baron’s eyes.
“Why me?”
He leaned forward, planting both hands against the table. The space between us shrank until his presence filled my lungs, raising goosebumps along my skin.
“What if I said you slept with me,” he murmured “and now I want to do it again?”
Something reckless sparked in me. A wave of nostalgia followed.
I grabbed his collar and pulled him forward, crushing my mouth against his in a sudden, hard kiss.
He froze for half a heartbeat, startled, his breath catching against my lips.
Then I pushed him away.
“Natalie!” he snapped, shock and anger colliding in his voice.
1 laughed lightly, the sound thin and hollow. “I’m hungry. Let’s eat.”
His jaw tightened. “Just like that?”
I shrugged, staring at him as he signaled the staff
Food arrived in waves, expensive and rare, dishes meant for council halls and royal tables, not for a woman who had nothing to her name.
I lifted my fork slowly.
“What happened yesterday was a mistake,” I said calmly. “A one–time thing. I’m not interested in anything beyond that.”
His eyes darkened, his wolf obviously present, but he said nothing.
“I loved Jensen for five years,” I continued quietly. “And he chose her. Love turns people into beggars. I won’t become one again.”
Silence stretched between us.

“I never proposed love.” Baron said coldly. “But if you ever change your mind or need a distraction, come to me.“
I narrowed my eyes, but he ignored me and started eating.
“Of course, let’s eat,” I said sarcastically.
The livestream kept playing beside our plates.
The doors of the hospital room burst open.
Jensen ran in.
His aura filled the screen even without sound. His eyes burned red, wild with his wolf’s fury.
“Tell me what you want!” he roared. “Money, land, power, anything! Just don’t hurt her!”
Sharon screamed his name as Jensen lunged at the man.
He pulled her free and took the blade across his arm.
Blood sprayed across the white floor.
