I stood by the fireplace, my fingers still tracing the edge of the table where the porcelain had shattered.

The Stone family was gone but the weight of their revelation remained.

“They were deceived, Raze,” I countered, though my own blood was still simmering with a possessive heat. “But we will find out by whom.”

I waited until the sound of their engine was completely gone.

“Change the investigation of that couple from back then,” I commanded. “Handle it in total secrecy.”

“Yes, Alpha.” The voice came from the darkness near the far archway; one of my elite shadows.

“It’s too early to be fooling around, Baron,” she muttered, though her heart was racing against my chest. She reached down and swatted my wandering hand away from the curve of her hip.

I looked a little disappointed, letting out a mock sigh, but I didn’t press further. I knew her body was still sore, and I had promised myself restraint.

There would be plenty of time to tease her later… a lifetime of it.

“What do you want to eat?” I asked, my voice husky with sleep. “I’ll have the kitchen prepare whatever you crave, and… there’s something I need to tell you.”

I didn’t wait for her to process that.

Right in front of her, I lifted the blanket and sat up, swinging my legs over the side of the bed without a shred of hesitation.

Natalie’s eyes went wide, her face turning a spectacular shade of crimson. “Baron! You’re not wearing anything! Cover yourself!”

I looked back at her over my shoulder, a smirk tugging at my lips. “Why wear clothes to sleep with my mate, Natalie? Besides, we’re mated… you wear my mark. We’ve spent forty–eight hours exploring every inch of each other. It’s fine; I don’t mind you looking. In fact, I encourage it.”

Faced with my shamelessness, Natalie rolled her eyes and pulled the duvet up to her nose.

Though she tried to act annoyed, I saw her gaze linger on the muscles of my back and the scars.

I had to admit, Raze was preening. He loved that she was looking.

I didn’t stop her from looking either, instead, I let my lips curve slightly as I stood in the center of the room.

“Freshen up first,” I said. “I’ll step out and see what this is about.”

“Okay,” Natalie nodded, her expression turning serious as she caught the change in my energy.

After I left, closing the door firmly behind me, I heard the bed creak as she finally got up to wash.

I felt a pang of guilt as I felt her pain through the link.
