The fluorescent lights of the studio hummed quietly as Renee and I pored over the final transcriptions.

Sean rolled his eyes at him, a gesture so full of sass I almost laughed. “Daddy, you ran off with Mommy… did you even ask us first?”

“Yeah!” Susie added, pouting as she stepped forward. “Daddy, Mommy doesn’t just belong to you. How can you hog her all to yourself? It’s not fair!”

I was completely charmed by the two of them.

Their fierce protectiveness over me was the sweetest medicine that took away my earlier guilt.

I knelt down, opening my arms wide.

“Sweethearts, I missed you too. Come here, give me a hug.”

The children leapt off the sofa like two little rockets, one on each side, throwing themselves into my arms with enough force to nearly knock me over.

Their scent filled my lungs.

“Mommy, can we sleep with you tonight?”

Susie’s bold request made Baron’s eyes widen in horror.

“No!” he blurted out.

“I’m talking to Mommy! Daddy, you’re so annoying!” Susie shot him a glare that was a carbon copy of his own predatory stare, though much cuter.

Baron instinctively caught my eye and gave a subtle, desperate tug at my hand.

I caught the meaning in his eyes instantly; he had only just gotten me back into his arms, and now he was facing the terrifying prospect of being exiled from the bedroom again.

If the kids slept with me tonight, the bridal chamber was effectively closed.

I smiled faintly, pretending not to notice his silent pleading. “All right. Tonight I will sleep with Susie and Sean… how’s that?”

“Me too?” Sean lit up with surprise and delight.

I could feel Baron’s heart sink.

I could almost hear the internal groan from his wolf.

“No! You’re a boy!” Baron argued with conviction, trying to find any loophole to keep at least one child out of the bed.

But I lifted Sean into my arms, feeling the sturdy weight of him.

I looked at Baron calmly, my heart aching with a sudden, sharp pang. “A four–year–old boy can certainly sleep beside his mommy once in a while. Besides, I’ve never gotten the chance to be there for them while they grew up. I have four years of bed–time stories to make up for.”

The regret in my voice cut him down instantly.

I saw the flash of guilt and love in Baron’s eyes.

“Fine!” he sighed, defeated and resigned. “The three of you sleep together… I’ll take the guest room. Happy now?”

He turned to leave, sounding like a martyr, but Sean reached out and grabbed his sleeve.

“Daddy, why can’t the four of us sleep together?”

Baron’s eyes lit up at once, the hope returning to his face with embarrassing speed.

He might not be able to keep his wife all to himself, but at least he could share the same mattress; in his mind, that was a victory.

I noticed his expression and couldn’t help laughing.

He really was like a giant, over–eager golden retriever when it came to his family.

“Well, if the bed’s big enough, the four of us could share it.”

“It’s big enough… absolutely big enough!” Baron didn’t wait for me to change my mind.

He scooped both Sean and Susie into his arms, one on each hip, and headed for the master bedroom. “I’ll take the kids in and get them settled. You can follow after!”

He dashed off as soon as the words left his mouth, as if he were afraid I’d revoke the invitation.

Watching his broad shoulders disappear down the hall, my lips curved into a smile. Being with Baron made every day feel so full, so grounded.

When I entered the bedroom, the scene was chaotic but warm.

Baron was already in the bathroom, having started the water to bathe Sean.

The sound of their splashing and Sean’s giggles echoed through the suite.

I turned to Susie, who was waiting by the edge of the bed. “Sweetheart, want me to give you a bath?”

“Yes!” Susie clung to me eagerly as I led her into the second bathroom.

As I washed her soft skin, she looked up at me with those big, amber–flecked eyes. “Mommy, watch closely… when I grow up, I want to be as pretty as you.”

“All right,” I whispered, kissing the top of her wet head. “But you’ll be even prettier, because you have your father’s strength.”

Soon after, the four of us climbed into the massive, silk–covered bed.
