Jensen’s POV

I remembered the night five years ago – the cold operating room and the surgeon’s face telling me that I would never walk again, let alone lead the Nightfang Pack.
Sharon had stepped forward without a second thought.
She had given up a piece of her own body, a rib, to ensure I remained the Alpha I was born to be.
I had been the one to suggest mating.
I had been the one to insist on a title for her, wanting to repay that debt with a home and a future.
But looking at her now, I realized I had built that future on a foundation of Natalie’s silence.
“Sharon, I-” I started, the word ‘dissolving the mate bond‘ like a jagged stone in my throat.
The words stuck in my throat.
Dissolving the bond meant the pack doctor… pain no wolf ever walked away from unchanged.
“Jensen, you don’t need to say anything.” Sharon cut me off, her voice trembling but strangely firm.
She wiped a tear from her cheek, her eyes fixed on the steaming cup of water. “I know I took a place that was never meant to be mine… I’ve seen the way you look at her old workspace. Now that Natalie’s back… I’ll step aside for her. Let’s go to the pack doctor and get the mate bond dissolved.”
The words hit me with the force of a physical blow.
I paused, my heart hammering.
Until a few minutes ago, that had been my only plan.
I had already failed Natalie once; I had stood by while her world burned, and I couldn’t betray her a second time by remaining tied to Sharon.
I was determined to win her back, to beg if I had to, to show her that the Nightfang was still her home.
I had been agonizing over how to break the news to Sharon… how do you tell a dying woman that I was leaving her for the girl she hated?
But I never expected her to take the initiative.
I looked at her.
Her face was pale, I remembered the scar on her side, the physical mark of her sacrifice for me.
If her family continued to decline and I abandoned her now, in her state, she might truly die even faster. How could I treat the woman who had saved my life with such cruelty?
“You’re not… you’re going to have to choose her or your mate?‘ Cairn announced.

I had convinced myself that once Natalie was back, once I carefully explained the burden of gratitude I carried, she would understand.
She was always the compassionate one.
“Enough,” I said, my voice roughening as my heart softened. “My attitude was wrong before. I’ve been cold, and for that, I am sorry. Now that I know Natalie’s alive, I will do what I must to seek her forgiveness. As for you… focus on your health, Sharon. We’ll talk about the bond later. Not today.”
In the end, I couldn’t do it.
‘You really are not fit to be an Alpha, Cairn insulted with a scoff.
“I’ll handle everything with Natalie,” I continued, pacing the floor as the restlessness returned. “But once she’s back, don’t see her. Don’t go after her. Can you just… live in peace with her? For me?”
I needed her to promise.
I needed to know that my two worlds wouldn’t collide in a spray of blood.
“I just don’t want her to make things hard for me,” Sharon whispered.
“She won’t,” I assured her quickly, wanting this conversation to end. “I’ll have people protect you. In the time you have left, I won’t let anyone harm you. What happens between me and Natalie has nothing to do with you; we’ll deal with it ourselves. All you need to do is focus on your health.”
I mind–linked Hansel to take her home.
I couldn’t look at her anymore without feeling the crushing weight of my own indecision.
Sharon rose weakly to her feet, her hand clutching the edge of my desk for support. Then, without a sound, her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed.
“Sharon!”
Panic shot through me.
I moved with my wolf–speed, catching her before her head hit the hardwood. She was cold, her breathing shallow.
“Hansel! Call the pack healer, now!”
I scooped her into my arms, her head lolling against my shoulder.
I rushed down the stairs, carrying her straight to the pack hospital, my heart pounding with a different kind of terror.
If she died now, Natalie would never forgive me, and I would never forgive myself.
And with her being wolfless, it’ll be harder to deal with.
Sharon’s POV
The scent of the hospital room was a comfort, a familiar stage where I played my best roles.
The moment the door clicked shut and I knew Jensen had been ushered to the waiting room, I let the unconscious mask slip.

Chapter 145 My Leverage
Johnson was standing at the foot of the bed, his face pale with a mixture of anger and sheer exhaustion.
He looked like a man who was one step away from a heart attack.
“Sharon, what game are you playing now?” he hissed, leaning over the bed rail.

“How am I supposed to explain this to Jensen? Do I tell him the moon sickness has already spread to your brain? That you’re about to die in forty–eight hours? Are you planning to fake your own death right here in the pack wing?”
I sat up slowly, smoothing my hair back.
“Fake my death?” I spat while giving him the stinkiest eye I could muster.
“I worked too hard to take the title of Luna, why would I throw that away now that the prize is finally within reach? Just tell him I fainted from low blood sugar brought on by extreme emotional stress.”
“Are you out of your mind? You’re a fucking wolf… blood sugar?” Johnson paced the small room, his hands shaking. “You’re digging a hole so deep you’ll never be able to wrap this up cleanly. Eventually, he will see the inconsistencies.” “I’m wolfless now,” I laughed softly. “Things like that are… normal for someone like me.”
