The basement gym still hummed with the heat of my workout and her scent clinging to the air.

I had just pulled a fresh shirt over my head when the encrypted line on my phone vibrated.

“Speak.” I commanded.

“Alpha, Johnson just left the dorms,” the voice on the other end reported.

My lead enforcer sounded tense.

“He shifted the moment he hit the tree line… He’s running on four paws, moving with top speed, heading for the neutral forest borders.”

I walked over to the frosted glass window, looking out at the Nightfang’s skyline.

“Intercept him,” I said. I could feel my wolf pushing in my head.

“Don’t kill him… not yet. Find a safe place, somewhere off the grid, and keep him under control. I want him alive when I deliver him to Natalie. He’s the key to every lie Sharon has told for the last five years.”

Understood, Sir. We’re moving into the borders now.”

I hung up, the silence of the room feeling more like a bandage.

Raze was pacing in my mind, ‘he shouldn’t be running,‘ he snarled. ‘He should be screaming.*

I agreed.

But as I turned to head back upstairs to Natalie, the phone buzzed again.

It hadn’t even been three minutes.

“Report.” I said, but the silence on the other end was heavy.

“Alpha… we didn’t get to him.”

My jaw tightened. “What do you mean you didn’t get to him? He’s a doctor, not a Shadow- runner. You should have had him pinned by now.”

“He didn’t make it to the border… Johnson tried to cross the intersection near the border… He was moving too fast then he lunged right into a tree. The impact was… absolute. He didn’t even have time to shift back. He died instantly on the asphalt.”

“There was no struggle,” the enforcer continued, his voice quieter now. “No attempt to get up. One second he was running… the next… nothing. Like his body just… shut down.“7

I said nothing.

The one man who could testify against Sharon was silenced in a random accident the moment he tried to flee.

“The timing is too perfect,” I whispered to the empty room.

Johnson wasn’t smart enough to make a move like that on his own.

Someone had pushed him.
