Chapter 187 A Dangerous Game

Baron’s POV

I let out a soft, low chuckle, leaning back against the headboard as I watched her.

Honey, you’re really cruel. Using a month of exile to keep me in line?

There are worse things than exile, Baron. Want to find out?Natalie shot me a glare that nearly made ne burst out laughing.

She tossed the silk blanket aside and got out of bed.

I watched her, fascinated.

Natalie had a way of reading me that no one else did.

She could always tell when I was putting on an act to tease her and when I was truly upset.

And despite the friction, I liked the way things were between us.

My feelings for her were plain to seeI didn’t hide the hunger or the devotion but I never pressured her to return them right away.

That made her comfortable.

Raze whined, urging me to take her.

Often, I used my deliberate playfulness to mask the sheer depth of my feelings, allowing her to acknowledge my heart without being overwhelmed by it.

That balance, that ease, was something I knew she truly liked.

When I realized she really had no intention of letting me back into her good graces this morning, I gave

  1. up.

I leaned back, pulling a cigarette from the pack on the nightstand.

I thought about lighting it I needed the nicotine to settle the restless energy in my blood then I remembered she hated the scent.

I let out a sigh and simply rolled the cigarette between my fingers, feeling the dry tobacco crackle.

My phone vibrated on the duvet.

A message from my operatives in the Southern pack sectors.

I looked at the screen.

Another five percent of the Nightfang’s ancestral land rights and corporate holdings had just been transferred into my shadow accounts.

I let out a cold, sharp laugh.

My long pale fingers flew across the glass.

[Five percent isn’t enough. Keep buying. Jensen is distracted by the scandal. If any other Pack Elders of Alphas want to sell their stake in the Nightfang to avoid the Accord’s investigation, have Shaura reachi to them personally.]

Yes, Alpha Baron, came the immediate confirmation.

With the Accord currently meeting to discuss a vote of no confidence to remove Jensen as Alpha.

From the bathroom, the sound of water erupted.

Through the frosted glass, Natalie’s curvy figure appeared in a hazy outline.

It was blurred, but it was enough to make my mouth go bonedry.

I all but fled the master bedroom, slipping into the guest room next door to take a cold shower.

Raze was growling in my head, urging me to go claim her but I ignored him again.

Standing in the mist of the guest shower later, water dripping from my chest, I checked my messages again.

My men were worrying on my behalf.

[Alpha Baron, should we do anything about Sharon being released? Won’t the Luna think we failed her and be unhappy with you?]

My mouth twitched, annoyed.

[My mate is smart. She’s not as dumb as you. Don’t bother with it anymore.]

I tilted my head back, gulping down ice water as the steam rolled out of the bathroom.

I heard the door to the guest room push open.

Natalie stood there, framed by the mist.

Like what you see?

Startled, Natalie stepped backonly to bump into my hand as I reached out to steady myself against the doorframe.

Natalie’s POV

When I stepped out of the bathroom, I saw that Baron was gone.

I casually pulled on some silk loungewear, feeling the first real sense of peace.

Just then, Chris called.

Miss, Sharon’s been released. The Summers family uncoveredthe real buyer of the poison and there evidence online of a fabricated conflict between that woman and Lucy. What should we do now

I paused.

Sharon released?

Baron’s evidence had been airtight. If she was free, then Jensen and her family must have worked together to bury the truth.

Of course.
