Chapter 186 The Storm And The Sanctuary

Jordan’s POV

I was sitting in tny study when Hansel’s name flashed on the screen.

I had to leave the meeting with the Accord te pick up his call.

When I heard what Sharon had done, my heart skipped a beat.

No wonder I couldn’t feel herI’ve been too busy to check up on her.

I had thought the distance disrupted the bond… a wave of guilt washed over me.

Hansel,I whispered, my voice sounding thin even to my own ears. Did Sharon reallyDid she really poison her mother? Why didn’t they bring her back to the pack?

Hansel’s voice was flat as if he was reading from a script, she had to be rushed to the nearby pack hospitalshe’s currently at our pack hospital.”

He cleared his throat before he continued, Yes, Alpha JordanSharon did poison the Luna. However,he paused, the surveillance footage at the boutique and the house didn’t catch her face during the handoffs. That leaves us a narrow margin to maneuverLike a gap in the light.

I gripped the edge of my mahogany desk, my knuckles turning white. Manuever? Hansel, this is attempted murder.

Alpha Jensen is currently buried,Hansel continued, ignoring my protest. Nightfang is drowning in the wake of the Moonmilk Café scandal. The Accord is currently planning on stripping him of his position so he doesn’t have the time or the political capital to pull Sharon out of this herself. He asks that you, Jordan, take care of it.

Take care of it? Hansel-

He stressed this: neither the Nightfang nor your pack can survive the scandal of a murderer’s daughter or wife. The Accord would strip our lands. You understand the stakes.

I understood.

As the Alpha and father, I knew exactly what Hansel meant.

We were a pack built on reputation, and the foundation was currently being eroded by the very person I had welcomed back with open arms.

I’ll handle it,I said, the words tasting like ash. I’ll find a scapegoat. I’ll silence the witnesses.

I hung up, but sweat beaded thick on my forehead.

I slumped back into my chair, staring at the family portraits on the wall.

Sharon was my daughter.

My own flesh and blood.

I had spent years mourning her, years resenting Natalie for taking her place.

But Sharon was venomous.

If she could methodically poison her own motherwhat would stop her from turning on me? If I crossed her, would I find pesticide in my morning tea too?

The thought left me cold.

Still, I knew I couldn’t abandon her. To let Sharon fall was to let the Pack’s name fall.

I stood up, my legs feeling shaky, and hurried off to make the arrangements.

Natalie’s POV

I woke first, roused by a sharp, insistent hunger, probably because I hadn’t eaten since breakfast.

For a moment, disoriented by the deep sleep, I didn’t recognize the room.

The silk sheets were too soft, the air too still.

Then, the strong arm draped over my waist reminded me exactly where I was.

The scent welcomed me, making me feel suddenly calm.

I turned my head slowly, my hair fanning out across the pillow, to find Baron’s handsome face right before

my eyes.

He was so close I could see every fine strand of his dark hair and the slight, relaxed curve of his lips in sleep.

We were home.

The realization brought a rush of warmth to my chest.

A playful impulse seized me; I reached out a finger, intending to poke his cheek to see if I could break that perfect composure.

I didn’t even make contact.. before my finger could touch his skin, Baron’s hand moved with lightning speed.

He didn’t grab my wrist; he caught my finger in his mouth, his teeth grazing my skin in a sharp, playful nip.

Ow! Baron! Are you a dog?

I yelped, a halflaugh escaping me as I tried to pull away.

I kicked him under the heavy duvet.

Baron opened his eyes.

They weren’t groggy or clouded with sleep; they were clear, and full of a wicked amusement.

He had been awake the whole time.

You’ve been awake?I accused, my heart doing a strange little dance in my chest.

Mm,he hummed, his voice deep and raspy with the morning.
