When the structural bolts of the “Star–Chaser” ride sheared, the sound was like a gunshot amplified a thousand times.

Raze took over before my brain could even process the trajectory of the steel.

I didn’t think about the crowd.

I only saw Sean.

He was a small, frozen figure in the middle of the walkway, his eyes wide as the massive iron began its terminal descent.

I reached him in a blur of motion.

I scooped him up, tucking his small frame against my chest, shielding his head with my arm.

She spoke softly to both children, her voice calm. “Sean, Susie, it’s alright. It was just an accident. I’ll have the bodyguards take you home to Yvonne first, okay? Mommy has to take Daddy to the hospital to get him patched up.”

“We’re going too!” Sean insisted, clutching Natalie’s neck.

“No need,” I grunted, leaning into her just enough to savor the scent of her hair. “The edge just caught me. Some bruising, a few cracked ribs. I’m an Alpha, Natalie. I’ll be closed up before we hit the pack limits. Don’t worry too much.”

My back was searing, the skin likely a map of purple and black, but I knew my own body.

Still, seeing Natalie’s tears filled me with a strange, intoxicating happiness that no medicine could provide.

“Natalie…” I whispered, my voice thick. “Do I have a place in your heart? Truly?”

She stopped dead near the car door, looking at me as if I had lost my mind. “Are you insane? You’re coughing blood, your back is probably a wreck, and you’re still asking about your ‘place‘?” Her voice trembled with a mix of fury and fear.

“I know this is a terrible time…” I coughed, tasting iron. “But I need to know.”

“Baron, I don’t even know if I should yell at you or thank you,” she said, the words spilling out in a broken rush. “When that thing fell… when danger hit, I hated myself for being useless. You reached Sean first… You threw yourself into the teeth of it without a second thought.”
