For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Nyx was silent and content within me, her predatory instincts lulled by the pure sound of children’s laughter.

Baron and I had spent the afternoon as a mother and a father.

Not as an Alpha of the Blackridge Pack or the Keeper.

We ran wild, fueled by the sheer infectious energy of Susie and Sean.

From the dizzying, multicolored whirl of the carousel to the stomachdropping plunges of the roller coaster, we were a pack in the truest sense.

I had initially worried that the twins might be too young to handle the more intense thrill rides, but I had vastly underestimated the blood of their father.

They weren’t just handling the rides; they were more excited than the adults, their golden eyes glowing with a feral delight as the wind whipped through their hair.

Watching them, I felt a deep, aching contentment.

Daddy, Mommy, I’m thirsty,Susie chirped, tugging at my sleeve. She was flushed from the heat and the excitement, looking every bit like a little princess who had finally found her kingdom.

She pointed a small finger toward a group of children nearby. I want what that kid has. The white drink in the bottle.

It was a simple cup of yogurt.

This was her first time out with both her parents, and her first time seeing yogurt in such a

way.

Sean, ever the protective older brother, chuckled at her greedy little face, though his own eyes held a spark of curiosity.

I’ll get it for you, Susie. Stay with Mommy.”

Be careful. Let’s go together,I said, already preparing to follow him toward the vendor.

But just as the words left my mouth, the air in the amusement park changed.

My wolf perked up instantly.

A low, groaning sound echoed through my head.

The cheerful music of the park was suddenly drowned out by a sickening, metallic screech of shearing bolts and snapping steel.

Commotion rippled through the crowd like a shockwave.

I didn’t wait to see what it was.

I instinctively scooped Susie into my arms, pulling her small body tight against my chest.

My gaze snapped to Sean he was only a few yards away, frozen as he looked up at the sky.

Then, I saw Baron.

He sprinted toward Sean like a man possessed, his movements a blur of speed.

My heart lurched into my throat.

I followed the line of his sight, and the sight before me made the blood in my veins turn to ice.

One of the massive, towering attractions in the distance had suddenly suffered a structural failure.

The structure folded.

Metal screamed.

Something massive broke loose above them.

And it was crashing straight toward the path where Baron and Sean were standing.

Baron! Sean! Look out!

My scream tore through the air as I tried to run, my legs acting on reflex to reach them, but a wall of blacksuited muscle blocked my path.

Madam, stay back! It’s too dangerous! It was one of Baron’s elite guards.

He blocked me, Protect Miss first! Alpha Baron ordered that no matter what happens, you and Miss must not be put at risk! You have to stay in the clear zone!

The guard’s words hit me like a slap, forcing a cold clarity into my panicked mind.

He was right.

If I rushed in with Susie in my arms, I wouldn’t be saving SeanI would be handing the disaster another two victims.
