Chapter 196 The Healer’s Debt
Natalie’s POV
The doctors had whisked Baron away for a full examination the moment we arrived.
The minutes stretched thin.
Every tick of the clock landed heavy in my chest.
Nyx paced restlessly in the back of my mind.

‘You should have told him about me,’ she snarled, her voice vibrating through my bones. ‘I can heal him. Why have you not told him?‘
I closed my eyes, leaning my head against the cold hospital wall as a heavy wave of guilt crashed over me.
Baron had protected me, provided for me, and today… he had nearly given his life for our son.
Yet I was still holding back.
Still hiding Nyx.
Keeping my wolf a secret while he stood before me with his soul laid bare.
Watching him stagger under the weight of that collapsing structure, spitting blood just to keep Sean safe…
It made my silence feel like betrayal.
I felt like a coward.
The lead doctor, a gray–haired man, finally stepped out of the examination room.
“The internal organs are intact,” he announced. “And as you know, he is an Alpha. His baseline healing factor is already working overtime. There is no permanent damage, though the blunt- force trauma to the soft tissue across his back was severe.”
I let out a breath I didn’t know I’d been holding, my knees nearly buckling with relief.
Beside me, Sean – who had been sitting like a frozen statue
finally slumped into his seat.
The guilt was etched across his small face, turning his usually bright eyes dull and haunted.
His little hands were still stained with Baron’s blood.

“Mommy… I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have gone to buy something.”
My heart broke at the small, fractured sound of his voice.
I moved instantly, sitting beside him and pulling him into my arms.
He was trembling.
“Sean,” I said softly, holding him close, “don’t blame yourself.”
He didn’t respond, but I felt the way his fingers tightened against my clothes.
“The world is full of accidents,” I continued, my voice steady even as emotion pressed against my throat. “We can’t predict them. We can’t stop them before they happen.”
I pulled back slightly, cupping his face so he had no choice but to look at me.
“What matters is what we do when they happen. How we face them… and how we move forward.”
His lip trembled.
“Your daddy rushed to save you because you’re his son,” I said gently. “Because he loves you. And so do I.”
Sean swallowed hard, his gaze dropping.
“Sean… look at me.”
Slowly, he lifted his eyes again.
“If it were me… or your dad… would you just stand there?”
“No!” he said immediately, his voice sharp despite the tears gathering in his eyes.
I nodded, brushing my fingers through his hair.
“Exactly. You wouldn’t have stood by. So how could we?”
His breathing hitched.
“This isn’t your fault,” I said firmly. “Even if you hadn’t gone to buy something, the ride still would have fallen. None of us could have stopped it.”
I softened my tone, pulling him closer again.

“Don’t carry this, alright? If you do… your daddy will only worry more. And right now, he needs to focus on getting better.”
Sean stared at me for a second longer.
Then something in his expression broke completely.
He threw his arms around my neck, burying his face into my shoulder as the sobs finally came.
He had been so incredibly scared.
I held him close, patting his back softly, letting him cry until there was nothing left inside him.
My wolf howled at the sound.
By the time Sean’s sobs began to quiet, Susie had inched closer.
She had been standing off to the side, her small hands clenched in the fabric of her dress, her eyes red but dry.
Without a word, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her favorite lollipop.
She hesitated for only a second before pressing it into Sean’s hand.
“Here,” she said softly. “You can have it.”
Her voice wobbled just slightly.
She was scared too.
But even now… she was thinking about him.
Sean sniffed, wiping his face with the back of his hand as he looked at her.
Then he nodded, holding the lollipop tightly as the two of them moved a little to the side, whispering quietly in that strange, twin language only they seemed to understand.
