I stood by the emergency room doors, my palm still warm from where I had squeezed Yvonne’s hand.
The children were gone now, whisked away to the safety of the villa.
Yvonne had lingered for a second before leaving.
“Sis,” she whispered, her voice low. “It looks like that ride collapsing wasn’t an accident.”
My gaze sharpened instantly, my inner wolf, Nyx, let out a low growl.
The guilt I felt for keeping Nyx a secret from Baron flared for a moment… if I had been transformed, if I had used my senses, could I have smelled the sabotage?
“What did you say? Who was behind it?”
“I don’t know yet. No leads,” Yvonne replied, her expression hardening.
“Whoever did it covered their tracks well. But I checked the maintenance logs… the rides were inspected just two days ago. That very ride was given special attention; it was mechanically impossible for it to fail on its own. And the inspector who signed off on it? He’s gone missing. His phone is dead, and his bank accounts were emptied an hour after the collapse.”
My chest tightened until it was difficult to breathe.
The image of the falling iron, the screams of the families, and the sight of Baron spitting blood flashed across my mind.
“If it was deliberate… what could they possibly want? All those people, all those children… how many families will be left grieving because of this? How can someone be so vicious?”
Yvonne said nothing.
She just looked at me with a pained sort of sympathy.
Apart from the petty betrayals and the venomous schemes of Sharon, I had never been exposed to the true, gut–wrenching darkness of high–level power plays.
But Yvonne had lived in that darkness her entire life.
She just patted my shoulder.

“Sis, tell my brother about this later. He’s an Alpha; he needs to be the one to decide how we retaliate. I’ll take the kids home first… they’ve been scared enough today.”
“Alright,” I said, forcing my voice to remain steady. “Take them back. Once Baron finishes the final checks and the doctor clears him, we’ll head home too. Thank you, Yvonne.”
I watched them leave.
The doctor had informed me that because Baron was an Alpha, he was healing well, but he needed my presence and my scent to knit back together perfectly.
However, the current round of internal scans required me to step out for a few moments.
I looked down at my clothes.
I was a mess.
Baron’s shirt had been torn to pieces by the impact, and I realized he wouldn’t even have something to wear when he was discharged.
There was a mall just across the street from the hospital.
I decided to run over quickly to buy him a fresh shirt.
I needed the movement, the air… anything to stop the shaking in my hands.
I had just stepped out of the hospital’s sliding glass doors, when a figure rushed toward me in a frantic panic.
I barely had time to brace myself before we nearly collided.
“Natalie!”
I froze.
That voice.
Jensen stood before me, his eyes wide and bloodshot, his chest heaving as if he had run miles.
He looked disheveled, his shorts and T–shirt were rumpled.
The moment his gaze dropped to my hands – still stained with the drying red of Baron’s blood, his face went deathly pale.
“Natalie, you’re hurt?”

His voice broke.
He reached for my hands instinctively, his fingers trembling with concern.
I pulled my hands back at once, tucking them behind my back.
Nyx snarled in the back of my mind.
“Jensen?” My voice was distant. “What are you doing here?”
The rejection seemed to cut Jensen to the bone.
He flinched as if I had struck him, his hands hovering uselessly in the air between us.

I could see the pain in his eyes…. he truly didn’t understand why I was looking at him like he was the dirt beneath my shoes.
“I saw the news,” he stammered, his words tripping over each other. “A ride collapsed at the park, and then… I saw your silhouette. I saw you in the background of a clip…. I came right away. Natalie, tell me where you’re hurt. Why were you there? Who was with you?”
His worry was raw.
In this moment, looking at his frantic expression, it was as if the last five years hadn’t happened.
Remembering everything he had done, my lips curled into a bitter, frozen smile.
“Jensen, if I recall correctly, we already broke up at the café,” I said, my voice eerily calm. “A proper ex knows how to disappear from someone’s life with a shred of dignity. Or is the concept of a clean break something the great Alpha of the Nightfang doesn’t understand?”
“No!” Jensen stepped closer, his scent trying to invade my space, but it no longer felt like home.
“We didn’t break up. I never agreed to it, Natalie! After five years together, after everything we shared, how can you just throw it all away? How can you look at me like a stranger?”
I instinctively stepped back, my frown deepening.
“Jensen, for a man of your stature, you should at least learn to keep your dignity,” I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. “You are making a scene in front of a hospital. Please, move.”
I tried to brush past him, but he stepped into my path again, his eyes burning with a desperate need to explain.
“Natalie, listen to me! I know you resent me,” he cried out, oblivious to the few people glancing

our way. “I know you hate me for not saving you first in that fire five years ago. I know you hate me for mating with Sharon behind your back while you were… while you were gone. I was wrong to hide it. I was a coward.”
He took a jagged breath, his face contorted with a frantic sort of grief.
“But you have to understand. “Five years ago – “He dragged a hand through his hair, pacing a step before turning back to me.
“The pavilion collapsed. I was trapped. Completely pinned. I couldn’t move breathe – Natalie, I was dying.”
His voice shook.
“I remember thinking… that was it.”
He swallowed hard.
“Sharon found me.”
My eyes narrowed slightly.

“She” He stopped, exhaled sharply, then tried again. “She saved me. I didn’t understand how
at first. I didn’t believe it. But the reports, the surgery records – I saw everything.”
His voice cracked.
“She gave me a rib.”
Silence fell.
“A black–market transplant,” he continued quickly, almost desperately. “She underwent it herself so I could survive the internal damage. Without it, I would’ve died before anyone could reach me. Even if you had found help – even if you had tried
