“No. It was in the medical and donor reports,” Jensen said, his voice pleading, desperate to convince me of a reality that didn’t exist.
“My men uncovered it… Sharon never meant to tell me. So you see, Natalie, it’s just repayment. I gave her the title of Luna because she’s dying. If it bothers you, I’ll send her abroad tomorrow. You’ll never have to see her again. Just give me time. When she’s gone, I’ll make my Luna. I’ll give you the grandest mate ceremony the territories have ever seen, make you my Luna for all the world to see.”
I stood there, the evening breeze whipping my hair across my face, listening to him try to convince me to believe the lie he believes in.
My mind was elsewhere… spiraling back to that night five years ago.
I had seen the reports with my own eyes.
I had been the one on the table.
So why did Jensen’s records now show Sharon’s name?
Sharon had only just returned to the Summers family back then.
She was a stranger to the inner circle of the Nightfang.
My trip to find the Witch Doctor was a secret mission, something only the highest–ranking members of the pack knew.
How could Sharon, a girl from the countryside with no connections and no power, have claimed credit for a surgical sacrifice?
And the Witch Doctor… how could his medical records and donor agreements have been tampered with?
What was hidden beneath all this?
I didn’t want to argue with Jensen anymore.
But I couldn’t let Sharon pollute my past.
I had been the one who gave up a rib to save him.
I had been the one who knelt before the Witch Doctor, begging for a miracle.

Yet somehow, Sharon had stolen it all, and Jensen had handed her the title of Luna as a reward for my pain.
As I stared at Jensen’s pained expression, a chill ran down my spine.
It didn’t feel like Sharon’s scheme alone.
She wasn’t smart enough to bypass the security of the pack or the encryption of the Witch Doctor’s records.
There had to be something deeper behind it.
But why target me?
Back then, I had been nothing but a misplaced child, a Scribe raised as the Summers‘ adopted daughter.
I had no status, no lands, no power.
What value did I have that made me worth scheming against for half a decade?
The thought made cold sweat run down my back.
Was Sharon just another piece on the board, or was she the one holding the knife?
Jensen mistook my silence for a softening of my heart.
He thought the mention of a “grand mate ceremony” was the key to my cage.
He stepped closer, reaching for my hand with a tentative, hopeful smile.
SLAP.
My palm cracked across his cheek before his fingers could even brush my skin.
Jensen’s head snapped to the side.
His cheek burned a vivid red, his whole body going stiff.
He stared at me in absolute, wide–eyed disbelief, his hand rising to touch the place where I had struck him.
It shook him to his core.
“Natalie,” his voice cracked, sounding small and broken. “You know my reasons. I’m doing this for honor. You still won’t forgive me?”

“Your reasons?” I let out a short, jagged laugh. “You don’t even know the truth yourself, Jensen. What do your reasons have to do with me? Jensen, no matter why you claimed Sharon, the fact remains… you betrayed me. You claimed her while you were still with me, while I was still waiting for you in our home. Do you admit it or not?”
