Baron’s POV
By then, I had finished the final round of checkups.

The doctors had prodded and scanned, and the Alpha in me had healed enough to satisfy their clinical charts.
But when I looked around and noticed Natalie wasn’t in the room, the world felt suddenly, dangerously empty.
My expression darkened.
The pressure radiating off me was a physical weight, the bodyguards standing by the door stiffened.
They knew the look in my eyes.
They had no idea where Natalie had gone, and looking at their pale faces, I knew they didn’t dare ask.
“What are you all standing around for?”
Natalie stepped through the door, her presence immediately settling the chaos in my blood.
I felt Raze lay down, a low purr of satisfaction echoing in my chest.
My expression shifted instantly from stormy to bright.
“Where did you go?” I asked, my voice dropping.
“Your clothes were filthy,” she said, gesturing to the ruins of my shirt on the chair. “And I didn’t have time to grab anything from home. So I went to a store nearby, bought something, then had it washed and dried before coming back. What’s wrong?”
She walked straight over to me, her movements fluid and purposeful.
I glanced at the fresh shirt in her hands.
I couldn’t stop the smile tugging at my lips.
The realization that she had gone out of her way to care for my comfort, to make sure I wasn’t stripped of my dignity even in a hospital, made the pain in my back vanish.
“You bought this for me?” I asked, my voice soft.

“Who else would it be for?” Natalie chuckled, her emerald eyes searching my face. “What did the doctor say? Everything’s fine, right?”
“Yeah. They ran a full exam this time, everything looks good.”
I didn’t tell her about the conversation I’d had with the lead surgeon just a few minutes prior.
I had caught the old man by the collar as he was leaving.
“Tell her,” I had growled, my eyes flashing a warning gold. “Tell her that because I am an Alpha, my healing is tied to the presence of my mate. Tell her that if she isn’t close… skin–to–skin close, tell her I need her scent to survive the night.”
The doctor had trembled, nodding frantically.
If I wanted a medical excuse to keep my wife in my arms, he was going to provide it.
I wasn’t above a little manipulation if it meant keeping her from leaving my side.
“Then why don’t we head to the ward so you can change?” Natalie asked.
She knew me well; she knew I hated being shirtless in front of the guards.
I had no objections.
We moved to a nearby private room, the door clicking shut and finally sealing out the world.
I sat on the edge of the bed, the movement sending a sharp sting through my spine.
I winced, perhaps a bit more dramatically than necessary.
When I admitted my arm hurt and I couldn’t quite lift it, Natalie didn’t hesitate.
She stepped forward, her scent surrounding me as she helped me change into the fresh shirt herself.
Her fingers were gentle, brushing against my skin as she guided my arms through the sleeves.
I watched her.
Her cheeks were heated, a deep blush creeping up her neck, and I could hear her heart pounding a frantic, beautiful rhythm.
She was trying to stay composed, but the way her hands trembled gave her away.
I couldn’t help myself.

I leaned in slightly, my voice a low, teasing vibration. “You’ve already seen it, touched it, yet you’re still shy? Didn’t you once grab my tie and demand to know if I’d sleep with you?”
The memory of that night flooded her face.
She turned a shade of red I didn’t know was possible.
“Shut up!” she hissed, pulling the fabric tight.
The more flustered she got, the more I found her adorable.
This was the real Natalie.
“My dear, you’re so fierce,” I joked, my expression exaggeratedly hurt.
She laughed despite herself but as she sat across from me, the laughter faded, replaced by a sudden, heavy hesitation.
“When I went out to buy your clothes,” she said quietly, her eyes dropping to her lap, “I ran into Jensen.”
“What?”
I shot to my feet, the pain in my back forgotten as a white–hot flare of possessive rage ignited in my gut. “Why the heck was he here? Did he bother you? You went out without bodyguards? What are they, useless? They actually let you go out alone?”
The thought of that man still pestering her made me bristle.
Seeing how agitated I was, Natalie quickly reached out, her hands resting on my chest to keep me from pacing and straining my injury. “He can’t bother me anymore, Baron. I slapped him across the face.”
The image hit me like a victorious heat spread through my chest
My mood improved immediately, a triumphant smirk crossing my face. “My wife is incredible!”
Only then did Natalie continue, her expression turning pensive. “But from the way he talked… there are still some things that don’t add up. You’re close with the Witch Doctor, aren’t you?”
My heart sank.
“Why do you want to see the Witch Doctor?” I asked, keeping my voice neutral.
Natalie didn’t notice the fleeting darkness in my eyes.
