Natalie let out a soft laugh that cut through my tension.

She reached out and playfully flicked the collar of the new shirt she had just bought me.

“What are you doing, Baron?” she teased, her smile bright enough to make the sterile hospital room feel like a palace.

My heart did a slow, painful roll in my chest.

The irony was so sharp it was almost comical.

She was asking me to go find myself to answer a question about a record I had authorized.

The urge to just end the charade, to tell her that the man she had knelt before in her darkest hour was the same man currently holding her hands, nearly overwhelmed my common sense.

I opened my mouth without thinking, the words spilling out before I could filter them. “Actually, Natalie… I’m-”

The sound was sharp and perfectly timed to ruin the most important confession of my life.

A voice called out from the other side of the heavy oak door.

It was one of my lead bodyguards, his tone carrying that specific edge of urgency but I wanted a moment of peace with my wife.

My eyes turned cold, the golden flicker of Raze’s irritation surfacing in my irises.

I wanted to put that guard through the wall.

I wanted to roar at the entire world to leave us alone.

Natalie felt the shift in my aura.

She lightly patted my arm, her touch calming my rising temper.

She leaned in and whispered, her breath warm against my ear, “Don’t always be so intimidating, Baron. Those guards are just doing their jobs, and they’re probably terrified of you. I’ll go wash my hands and check on the kids‘ status with Yvonne; you talk to your man.”

With that, she stood up, giving me one last lingering look that promised we weren’t done with our conversation, and walked toward the en–suite bathroom.

I watched her retreat, feeling a strange, hollow frustration.

He took a half–step back, sensing the pressure radiating off me.

“Alpha, it’s about the borderside surveillance,” he stammered, his voice hushed. “Our men stationed near the old pack spotted members of the Summers family. Sir, Alpha Jordan went there personally. He’s moved into a local estate. We believe it has something to do with the investigation into the Luna’s background… the hospital where the switch occurred.”
