“What is it?” I asked, my voice cutting through the heavy–silence. “Is there something wrong with that symbol? Baron, you recognize it, don’t you?”

Baron’s teeth ground audibly, a sound like grinding stone.

“It’s the Gunn pack,” he spat, the name sounding like a curse.

“The Gunn pack?” For a second, I didn’t understand.

I’ve never heard of such pack in my years of research.

But the squad leader immediately understood.

His face went even paler, a flicker of genuine fear crossing his eyes. “Luna,” he whispered, “Alpha Baron and the Gunns are mortal enemies. The fact that Alpha has survived all these years is nothing short of a miracle. The Gunn pack has tried everything under the sun to kill him. They are the true predators of the North.”

A wave of sorrow flickered across my eyes as I looked up at Baron.

Feeling my steady warmth, Baron turned to me, trying to force a smile, though the expression faltered before it reached his eyes. “Natalie, I’m fine,” he said, his voice sounding follow. “I’ll make sure you get an answer about Johnson if the Gunns took him, it means they’re trying to hide something even bigger than Sharon’s lies.”

“It doesn’t have to be right away, I said, shifting the subject without hesitation.

I couldn’t stand the way his eyes looked.

“Let’s go home first. The kids were shaken by what happened at the amusement park… we don’t even know how they’re doing after the hospital visit. Why don’t we check on them?”

The truth was, I didn’t care much about Johnson anymore… whether he lived or died was secondary to the man standing in front of me.

I didn’t know how to soothe the scars of a family war directly, but I knew the children were his softest spot.

They were the only “pure” family he had.

Sure enough, his eyes softened at the mention of Susie and Sean.

He nodded slowly. “All right. Let’s go home first. Susie’s timid… she’ll probably have nightmares tonight after seeing the wreckage.”

“That’s fine, I’ll sleep with her,” I promised, my voice softening. “Sean was scared too; I’ll stay with them both. We’ll make a camp in the nursery.”

With a few words, I felt the chill that gripped his heart begin to ease.

We turned and walked back toward the car.

The squad leader, watching Baron’s reaction, suddenly bowed deeply to me.

I saw him trade a look with the other guards.

They knew.

Every time the Gunn pack was mentioned, Baron would lose control, spiraling into an outburst that would take ages to recover

from.

Yet I had softened his mood with a few words about the children.

As we reached the SUV, Baron’s voice drifted back to the injured men. “Get some money from Yvonne; make sure the brothers get proper treatment at the hospital.”

The car pulled away right after, and I caught a glimpse of the squad leader’s misted eyes in the rearview mirror.

Baron was still the same man he’d always been… fierce to his enemies, but loyal to a fault to those who bled for him.
