I looked down at the sheer volume of bank cards, property deeds, and pack summaries, feeling a mixture of being utterly flustered and completely helpless.
Baron shifted closer, his presence warm and solid beside me
He lowered his voice, “when my mom was alive,” he began, his gaze softening with a memory, “she told me that once I got a mate… or even just made things official with a girl I had to hand over my bank card. All of them.”
I blinked, staring at him. “What?”
“She said a man’s job is to earn money; a woman’s job is to manage it,” he continued, a small, nostalgic stile playing on his lips. “She had a theory: if a man has too much money sitting in his own pocket, he’ll go bad. He’ll get restless. So, it has to be kept by his mate. That’s the rule in our family. It’s the only way to keep a household balanced.”
It was the first time I had ever heard such a philosophy.
My mind immediately drifted back to the Summers‘ household. Jordan was the undisputed gatekeeper of the pack’s wealth.
Every kobo Quincy spent was scrutinized; if she wanted a new piece of jewelry or even a specific vintage for a gala, che had to navigate a series of subtle requests to Jordan.
And Jensen… Jensen had treated me as a permanent dependent.
He provided for me, yes, but he never empowered me.
And now Baron was telling me he wanted to surrender his entire financial lifeline to me?
I hurried to push the folder back toward him, my heart racing.
“That’s really not necessary, Baron. Truly. Once I get back my royalties from Jensen and the Stone family’s legacy is fully revived, i won’t be short of money. I can support myself.”
Baron didn’t take the folder, Instead, his expression shifted to insecurity that made my breath hitch.
“Aren’t you my mate?” he asked, his voice cracking slightly. “It’s simple, Natalie… my job is to bring home the money, and yours is to run the household. That’s how I was raised. Or is it…”
He trailed off, his golden eyes searching mine with a look of profound hurt. “Is it that you never actually planned to live a real life with me? Is this just a temporary stop for you?”
He looked like he was on the verge of breaking down completely.
The thought of his heart, already so scarred, fracturing further because of my hesitation was more than I could bear.
dy, reaching out to catch his hand. “I really do want to live a life with you. I’m not going anywhere, Baron.”
the mountain of cards. “Fine, fine. I’ll take it, all right? I’ll manage it for us.”
was instantaneous.

Baron’s face lit up with a joy so brilliant it was almost blinding.
But then, a practical thought struck me.

“But Baron… do you have any cash on you? You’re an Alpha. You can’t exactly walk around without a penny in your pocket Dot need to transfer you some back?”
He grinned, looking remarkably unbothered. “Whatever you think is fine. I don’t need much when I’m out. My people handle the tabs, and if I’m with you, you’re the boss.”
I had never done something like this before.
I had never been the one handing out the
money.
“Would… a hundred thousand a month work?” I asked, hesitating. “If it’s not enough for your daily coffee or whatever else you need, you can just tell me. I don’t want you to be embarrassed in front of your men.”
“Perfect,” he said immediately.
He didn’t even blink at the amount.
He pulled out his phone and opened WhatsApp, bringing up the transfer interface with an eagerness that was almost comical.
I felt like I was dreaming as I went through the motions.
I took one of the cards he had just given me, linked it to my account, and transferred the hundred thousand to him.
When the notification pinged on his phone, I saw him staring at the/screen, grinning like a complete fool.
I watched him for a long moment, a deep sense of worry beginning to sprout in my chest.
‘He is a provider…‘ Nyx gushed in my head.
‘He’s not okay,‘ I replied quietly. ‘Something in him… cracked.‘
The Gunn family, the accident, the stress… it’s finally pushed him into some sort of mental breakdown.‘
There was no other explanation for why a man of his wealth was acting like a schoolboy receiving his first paycheck.
I resolved then and there that I would call Yvonne and schedule a full neurological exam for him the moment we got home.
No excuses.
