Chapter 248 The Past

Natalie’s POV

I sat with my chin resting in my hand, staring at the digital canvas on my tablet.

The draft for the Winter Wolf flagship gown was nearly complete, but as I looked at the sweeping lines of the train, I felt a nagging void.

Something was missing.

I let out a slow exhale and set my stylus down.

Inspiration was a temperamental beast; it couldn’t be hunted by force.

In the North, I had learned that when the creative well runs dry, digging deeper only yields mud.

I stood up, my muscles tight from hours of focus.

The villa was silent as I made my way to the small kitchenette in the studio and brewed a cup of black coffee, the aroma of the roasted beans grounding me.

Returning to my desk, I reached for my phone, intending to scroll through some reference videos or perhaps check the pack’s news updates.

That was when I saw it – a red notification dot on the Wolvesbond app.

I frowned.

My account was mostly used for professional networking and following trend forecasters, but I had left my DMs open for business inquiries.

I tapped it open, expecting a message from a pack Alpha or a Beta.

Instead, I saw a selfie.

A raw image of a man who looked like he had been dragged through a hurricane of his own making.

Jensen.

Γ

My thumb hovered over the screen.

I felt a flicker of annoyance at myself for forgetting to block him on this specific platform.

I had purged him from WhatsApp, my personal line, and my professional email, but he had found this one last crack in the wall

As I read his frantic, groveling message about Sharon and Johnson, I didn’t feel the sting of betrayal of the rush of old wounds.

To my surprise, I actually laughed.

Well, well.

So the Alpha of the Nightfang had finally smelled the rot in his own den?

He had learned the truth about Sharon and the doctor working together to deceive him.

But the scandal hadn’t even broken online yet.

My father’s team was still sitting on the full dossier, waiting for the perfect moment to trigger the Nightfang pack’s collapse.

How did he know?

Had his own Beta finally grown a backbone, or had Sharon’s ties become so translucent they simply shattered?

And if he was already this shaken, wouldn’t he completely lose his mind once the world saw the evidence I was holding?

I sipped my coffee, watching the screen as the “typing” bubble appeared again.

Jensen’s POV

The screen of my phone was a blur through the moisture in my eyes.

I sat in the darkness of my car, parked illegally on the shoulder of the road leading up to the Stone gates, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Cairn, my wolf, was still a silent, cold void in my mind.

She saw it.

She has to have seen it.

The “Seen” receipt appeared, but the silence that followed was more agonizing.

I couldn’t stop.

The words were pouring out of me like blood from a wound.

“Natalie, I love you. Whether five years ago or five years later, the only one I’ve ever truly loved is you. Everything else was a distraction, a sickness.”

I hit send.

My fingers were trembling so hard I could barely hit the keys.

“Natalie, if not for her saving my life, I never would have agreed to mated Sharon. I thought I owed her a debt of blood. But I never imagined that woman would lie to me like this. was a pawn, Natalie. I was tricked.”

I stared at the “Delivered mark.

My eyes grew wet, a hot tear splashing onto the glass screen.

How could I have been so blind?

“Natalie, forgive me, please? Let’s start over. Just one more chance. I promise I’ll never treat you that way again because of anyone else. I’ll give you all my love. I’ll even give you the entire pack, the title, everything – take it all, if you’ll just come back to me.

I was desperate.

was a man standing on the edge of a precipice, realizing that the only thing that could save me was the person I had pushed over the side.

Suddenly, the typing bubble appeared on her end.

My heart leapt into my throat.

I held my breath, my grip on the phone so tight I feared the casing might crack.

“Jensen, stop disgusting me.”

The words were a bucket of ice water.

“The Natalie you knew is already dead. She died in the warehouse fire you ignored. The one standing before you now is Natalie Stone. And don’t talk to me about starting over. Some things, once ended, can never begin again.”

I didn’t care about the coldness.

She had replied.

She was listening.

I surged forward, my thumbs flying across the screen.

“Natalie, I knew you still care about me, don’t you? You wouldn’t be angry if you didn’t care! Sharon fooled me, that’s all! She used my sense of duty against me. Can’t you just give me another chance to make it right? I’ll make her pay for what she did to us!”

The reply came back almost instantly.

“Fooled you? Are you sure that’s why you mated her, Jensen? Was it really her clumsy lies? Or was it because life with me felt too calm, and you wanted the excitement of a ‘reckless’ woman? Wasn’t it because you still weren’t over Sharon and wanted to win back the girl who once rejected you?… Are you really going to claim that deep down you didn’t want to be fooled?”
