Chapter 267 The No Territory Zone Haven

Natalie’s POV

“Mommy, Daddy, we’re here! Time to get out!”

Susie’s high-pitched voice cut through the passenger door like a silver blade, completely shattering the heavy haze that still filled the backseat.

I froze, my hand clutching the lapels of my completely undone blazer, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

I wanted to strangle Baron and bury his shameless body beneath the unpaved dirt of this countryside clearing.

If the kids saw us like this, I would never be able to lift my head in the Northern registries again.

Baron, however, didn’t look even remotely panicked.

He sat back on his heels, his large hands moving with an infuriatingly calm precision as he reached down to help me align the twisted buttons of my blouse.

He let me kick at his shin weakly, a low, rumbling chuckle vibrating deep within his broad chest as he caught my foot and brought it back down to the seat.

“Next time I’ll be faster, I swear,” he murmured against my ear.

Next time?

He smoothed down the wrinkled wool of my pants, his dark eyes glittering with a smug devotion.

“I won’t drag it out so much, my beautiful Scribe. I’ll keep the timeline in mind.”

“Baron!”

I ground his name out between my teeth, my face burning so hot I was certain the interior windows were going to fog up all over again.

I nearly exploded right there on the leather cushions.

That was absolutely, categorically not what I meant!

Chapter 267 The No Territory Zone Haven

Outside the tinted glass, the persistent knocking continued

The small, frantic patter of the twins hands was suddenly joined by the heavy thud of tartical boots against the gravel.

Flynn had walked up to the perimeter of our vehicle.

Before the twins could launch their little bodies against the door handle. Flynn stepped in.

Scooping up Susie effortlessly into his left arm, he extended his large right hand to stop Sean mid-stride as well, pulling both pups back onto the grass.

“Mommy’s carsick.” Flynn announced to the children.

“The winding roads through the lower slopes were too rough for her. She’s resting inside the carriage for a moment. Your stinky Daddy will carry her into the house soon.”

He shot a vicious, lethal glare directly at the passenger chassis, his jaw clenched so tight the bone looked like it was about to snap.

Baron, that absolute, shameless bastard.

Flynn turned on his heel and carried the protesting children away toward the rustic wooden lodge at the center of the clearing.

Shit.

The scent trapped inside the SUV had probably told him everything.

Baron watched my brother retreat through the glass, and for the first time all afternoon, he scratched his nose a bit sheepishly.

“My Luna,” he muttered, a slow, crooked smile touching the corners of his lips as he looked down at me.

“I think your brother is genuinely mad at me this time.”

“Stop playing the pathetic victim,” I snapped, rolling my eyes as I finally managed to secure the last button of my blazer.

I felt completely drained, my muscles loose and heavy, leaving me entirely too exhausted to argue with his lack of boundaries.

We had traveled down to this forgotten neutral axis to trace the bloody fragments of my past, yet Baron had utilized the hour-and-a-half drive to completely derail my focus.

My mind was supposed to be analyzing the old hospital registries, not recovering from his touch

Seeing that I was genuinely upset. Baron dared not push his luck any further.

The playful, teasing light in his eyes vanished.

He smoothed the stray tangles from my dark hair, dressing me properly until every line of my corporate attire was perfectly aligned, and then he reached down, lifting me effortlessly inte his massive arms as if I weighed no more than a newborn pup.

I didn’t protest this time.

I simply buried my face directly into the fabric of his white dress shirt.

If Flynn had already given the twins the excuse that I was carsick, then I would let that be my official shield for the rest of the evening.

I would wrap myself in that lie rather than face the knowing looks of the vanguard enforcers outside.

Baron let out a soft, deep rumble of amusement at my shy, flustered demeanor, his broad chest shaking rhythmically against my wet cheek as he pushed the heavy SUV door open with his shoulder.

My annoyance flared all over again at the vibration of his laughter.

Wanting to punish him for his absolute lack of remorse, I leaned my head forward and bit down hard into the flesh of his chest through the linen of his shirt.

Unfortunately, because I was trying to keep my face completely hidden beneath his collar, I bit entirely too low.

Baron jolted instantly, his entire frame freezing as though he had been struck by a bolt of high-altitude lightning.

A sharp, ragged gasp escaped his throat, his boots slipping slightly on the loose gravel of the driveway.

For a split second, he nearly stumbled over his own feet.

Only at the absolute last moment, his Alpha reflexes locking into place, did he manage to steady his stride and keep us both from tumbling onto the grass.

When I lifted my head slightly, I saw that his dark eyes were burning a deep, turbulent gold,

the raw weight of his wolf rushing back to the surface.

His voice was hoarse, thick with a dangerous, heavy heat that made Nyx whine in anticipanon.

“Nat…” he ground out, his breath coming in short, uneven patterns against my temple. Are you entirely sure you don’t want to stay inside the vehicle for the rest of the day? Because if you keep marking that territory, the countryside registry can wait until morning

I realized exactly what I had done, the specific placement of my bite registering in my man second too late.
