Chapter 268 Unexpected Visitors
Chapter 268 Unexpected Visitors
Natalie’s POV
“Yes, call a doctor. Flynn chimed in from the stone hearth, his deep voice carrying a rough tone that was entirely laced with a mocking satisfaction.
He stood with his arms crossed over his chest as he deliberately stoked the fires of my humiliation.
“We can’t have the Scribe suffering from a mysterious, sudden heat while we’re in the middle of an active investigation. A complete medical evaluation is definitely in order.”
I kept my hands firmly plastered over my face, the heat radiating from my skin so intense 1 felt as if my cheeks were turning to liquid silver.
I wanted nothing more than to sink directly into the wooden floorboards, to dissolve into the grain of the logs and disappear from the face of the territory entirely.
Before the twins’ pup anxiety could escalate into a full-blown frantic scent-spike, Baron quickly intervened.
His grip around my thighs tightened slightly.
“No need, my loves,” Baron said, his tone leveling.
He shot a brief, warning glance toward my brother before looking down at the pups clutching at his boots.
“Your mommy doesn’t need a pack physician, she just needs some quiet, uninterrupted rest in the inner den to settle in. The winding roads through the lower gaps were simply too reactive for her senses. If you’re bored sitting inside the cabin, why don’t you take your uncle Flynn out for a walk around the clearing? It’s your very first time running in the countryside, after all.”
The shift in the twins’ attention was instantaneous.
The mention of exploring the open, they immediately pricked their ears at the
prospect
of a
run.
“Really?” Susie squealed, her high-pitched voice exploding with a sudden curiosity as she let go of my pants and bounced on her heels.
She turned her wide, golden eyes toward Flynn.

“Uncle. I heard there are wild pigs in the neutral axis, Sean added as he took a step toward my brother.
“Is it true that they can dig through the frozen roots with their teeth? Can we track their scept markers in the dirt?”
The twins completely lit up, bombarding Flynn with a relentless crossfire of questions about the rural ecosystem.
Flynn looked down at the pile of children suddenly demanding his expertise, and then his gaze drifted back to my flushed, intensely embarrassed face peaking out from between my fingers.
He let out a low, defeated sigh.
“Alright, alright, you little rogues,” Flynn said, his rough voice turning warm as he reached down to scoop Susie onto his shoulder while extending his hand to Sean.
“Uncle will take you out to explore the perimeter lines. We’ll see if we can find any tracking trails before the sun hits the tree line.”
The heavy front doors of the lodge clicked shut behind them, and the house grew remarkably quiet once their voices faded into the distance of the clearing.
Baron didn’t waste another second.
He strode down the short carpeted corridor, carrying me into the master bedroom at the rear of the lodge.
The moment his boots cleared the threshold, I immediately scrambled down from his arms, my movements frantic as I pushed his chest away and regained my footing on the rug.

I turned on him as I glared at him with every ounce of strength I could muster, my heaving beneath my still-wrinkled blazer.
Before he could open his mouth to offer another smooth excuse, I turned on my retreated into the adjacent bathroom, and slammed the heavy wooden door shut

Outside, I could hear him walk away from the room.
By the time I finally unlocked the bathroom door and emerged back into the bedroom, the house was completely empty of voices.
