Chapter 278 Emergency Room

Natalie’s POV

Heaned against the polished wooden banister of the staircase, my chest rising and falling in a slow rhythm as forced my bre

to level but.

Beside me. Baron stepped into the center of the room, his bright red cooking apron still tied around his massive waist over his custom trousers.

His dark eyes were fixed on my face.

They are gone, Natalie,’ Nyx murmured within my consciousness, her pitch-black head lifting from her paws as she let out a low, satisfied vibration.

The intruders have been driven from our borders. The threshold is clean.’

But before the domestic quiet of the cabin could fully settled, the heavy encrypted communication device resting on the mahogany side table let out a sharp chime.

A text message from Flynn flashed across the screen.

I stepped forward, my fingers tightening slightly around the casing as I swiped the screen open.

My heart perform a sudden, tight squeeze against my ribs as I read the brief, frantic line of text.

“The biological tracker markers we had placed on the human couple had just crossed the perimeter of the safehouse sector at a high-speed velocity.”.

Flynn’s secondary text came through a second later: The targets have been rushed to the regional pack medical facility.

Natalie and Baron both went completely still for a long, suffocating moment, the air inside the foyer turning instantly cold.

A sharp, heavy wave of worry flickered across our faces.

I pressed the call token, thrusting the speaker toward my ear before the line could even finish encrypting.

“Flynn, speak. What happened at the safehouse? Check immediately who was assigned to guard that couple’s den.”

Baron and I exchanged a long look.

We didn’t need to speak to align our thoughts; I knew with absolute certainty that Baron was thinking the exact same thing I was.

Waylon and Ruby had been ruthlessly cleaning house within the Stone family ranks lately, executing rogues and stripping corrupted elders of their registry tokens ever since my identity had been verified.

But looking at the blinking alert on the screen, a deep, sickening unease grew inside my gut.

That human couple was too important to our entire survival strategy.

Whether it was Flynn or Waylon managing the tactical deployment, they would have sent only their most loyal, oath-bound pack enforcers to handle this specific security detail.

That stark reality shown

uple standing directly around Waylon and Flyn weren’t reliable in the least.

Flynn’s voice came through the speaker, low, and tight with a furious, breathless cadence that let me know he had clearly noticed that bordying vulnerability too.

“Don’t worry about the perimeter security right now, Natalie, I’ve already had every single enforcer guarding their safehouse arrested and stripped of their pack weapons,” Flynn barked through the digital link.

“We’ll bring them to the pack cells and interrogate them slowly until their wolves break. I’ve already brought the twin pups along to the medical facility detail with me; I saw you and Baron were busy dealing with the Summers corruption earlier, so I didn’t want to bother your den with a secondary tactical alert. Go eat your dinner first, there’s absolutely nothing you can de on this ridge right now… everyone’s currently locked in the emergency room.”

Flynn’s dismissive words made my dark brows knit together, a cold sweat breaking across my neck.

“Emergency room?” I asked, my voice dropping into a sharp register. “Was it a kinetic strike? An infiltration? Or was it poisoning?”

“Yes,” Flynn ground out between his teeth.

“The two of them started vomiting and having violent diarrhea suddenly during the evening shift change; they foamed at the mouth, their internal channels collapsing in a fraction of a second. The local butler called my terminal directly, and I had to have our vanyard rush them to the pack facility using the emergency frequencies. The kids ate a little travel ration on the way down, so don’t worry about their bellies.”

Flynn rattled off the report with rapid-fire speed.

Baron’s brow pinched even tighter as he leaned over my shoulder, his large hand clamping onto the edge of the table.

“Flynn, think clearly,” Baron commanded, his voice a level that brooked no argument. “How long ago did their transport cross the hospital threshold? How long have they been inside that ward?”

“Less than three minutes, Baron; what’s wrong with the timeline?”

Baron lowered his voice until it was a whisper that barely cleared the microphone. “Have your elite men get in there and check the attending staff right away, Flynn. I suspect whoever orchestrated the toxin at the safehouse will strike the couple again the exact moment we leave them in a public medical facility. A hospital ward is the easiest place to execute a clean scrub.”

Flynn didn’t even bother to hang up the call.

Through the open speaker, we heard the sudden, explosive sound of his leather boots accelerating into a sprint against the flooring, followed instantly by the sharp, splintering crash of a door being kicked opened.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing with that syringe?”

Flynn’s voice blared through the phone casing like a war horn, raw, furious, and amplified by his wolf’s vocal cords.

Baron and I understood the reality of the situation instantly.

Baron swiped the line to a hands-free monitor, his gaze snapping down to my face.

“Are you hungry, Natalie?”
