Natalie’s POV

The green light on my phone blinked once before fading completely.

Silence settled over the country road again.

I stood still for a moment with the phone still in my hand, listening to the emptiness left beftind after my parents disconnected the call.

My mother’s furious promise.

My father’s order to mobilize the vanguard.

The words still echoed inside my head.

I exhaled slowly.

“They disconnected before I could stop them,” I murmured quietly.

Beside me, Baron looked entirely too pleased with himself.

Moonlight cut sharply across the side of his face, catching the smug curve of his mouth as he slid both hands into the pockets of h coat like he hadn’t just successfully caused absolute chaos across two territories.

I narrowed my eyes at him.

“You did that on purpose.”

His shoulders shook with deep laughter immediately.

The sound rolled through the empty road, low and rich and entirely unashamed.

“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Liar.”

The grin on his face widened.
