Baron’s POV

The first thing I noticed when I opened my eyes was the scent.

Her scent.

It lingered faintly in the healing chamber, layered over medicinal herbs and dried blood.

She had been here.

The ceiling of my private lab was a blur of sterile white. My chest felt like it had been hollowed out and filled with broken glass. Every breath was a physical combat.

“About time,” Raze rumbled. His voice was a low vibration in the back of my mind, weaker than usual, but the predatory edge was still there. “I was tired of watching you rot.”

I didn’t waste time on the pain; I threw back the thin sheet, my muscles screaming in protest.

The IV line in my arm tugged, and with a sharp prick of annoyance, I sat up. The world tilted violently to the left, but I shoved through the vertigo.

“Baron! For God’s sake, can you try valuing your life a little?”

Finn was across the room in a second, his face a mask of exhausted rage as he tried to put a hand on my shoulder to push me back down.

I didn’t protest… I didn’t have the breath for it; I just looked at his hand.

Finn froze, shifting back. He knew that look. He pulled his hand back as if he’d touched a live

wire.

“Do you even know how close you were to dying this time?” Finn’s voice was shaking. “You operated for six hours with a collapsed lung and then swallowed an untested stimulant that nearly fried your nervous system. You were flatlined for two minutes, Baron!”

I didn’t care about the stimulant; I just looked past him, my eyes searching the monitors in the room.

“How long?” I asked. My voice sounded like it had been dragged over gravel.

“Four days,” Finn snapped. “Four days of us wondering if we were going to have to bury the Alpha of Blackridge because of a girl who isn’t even part of our pack.”

The pressure in the room shifted as I felt Raze rise, clearly not happy about Finn’s comment.

I pulled the IV needle out of my vein, a bead of dark blood welling up, and started putting on my shoes. My fingers were stiff, the skin on my knuckles tight from the burns, but I forced them to move.

“She is now part of the pack,” I said.

Finn went silent as his jaw tightened.

I stood up, ignoring the strain on my bones. I walked over to Finn and clapped a hand on his shoulder.

I didn’t do it gently.

I squeezed, my fingers digging into the muscle and bone. Finn winced, his knees buckling slightly under the weight of my authority. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead.

“She’s mine,” I said, my voice a low, lethal hum. “Whatever I do for her, I do because I choose to. If you have a problem with her, you have a problem with me.”

“Baron, I’m not trying to-”

“If you’re not going to treat her with respect,” I cut him off. “Then leave; you can start your own pack. But if you stay, you look at her with the same respect you give the moon. Do I make myself clear?”

Finn’s face went pale. He knew I wasn’t bluffing. I would burn Blackridge to the ground before I let one of my own men look at Natalie as anything less than a queen.

“Alpha, forgive me… I’m not leaving,” Finn whispered.

I released him and straightened my shirt, the movement making my vision swim, but I stood tall.

“How did I wake up?” I asked.

I knew the formula I’d swallowed; in its current state, it was a suicide pill. Waking up four days without permanent brain damage wasn’t just luck.

He hesitated, “She helped.”

“How-” I asked but was interrupted by the researchers and guards, who had been standing in the corners and all snapped to attention.

“Alpha!” they shouted in unison.

“Everyone gets to leave,” I said, walking toward the door. “Take the rest of the week off.”

“She donated blood to help generate a cure,” Finn says evenly.

The room stills.

“A cure? You read through my journal?” I asked, my voice raising with each word.

I had not shared that experiment with anyone.

“You were flatlined,” Finn answered.

“Next time, you wait for my orders.”

“There wasn’t going to be a next time.”

“How much blood did you take?” I asked, keeping my composure.

“Enough to stabilize the cellular rejection response,” Yvonne answers carefully.

That is not a number.

Three units from a healing human.

My gaze shifts to the bandage on her wrist.

I step closer to the bed; her breathing is steady.

“Who authorized it?” I ask.

Yvonne answers. “It was the only viable option when your vitals collapsed the second time. Your wolf was rejecting synthetic plasma. And since your journal explained how unique her blood was, we all agreed.”

Finn added, “You would have died.”

That is not the part that concerned me.

“She volunteered?” I ask.

“Yes.”

Of course she did… without understanding the full consequences.

Without knowing if I would wake.

Without knowing what that would mean for her if I didn’t.

My jaw tightens slightly.

Not at her.

At the fact that no one informed me immediately upon waking.

“You withheld this information,” I say calmly.

Finn doesn’t flinch. “You had just regained consciousness; the priority was your stabilization and pack control.”

He’s not wrong.

But that doesn’t remove the irritation coiling beneath my ribs.

I look down at her again.
