The pack healer had just finished his groveling report, his voice stoic with the kind of professional concern that usually scared the patient.

Alpha Jensen, the moon sickness has indeed spread. Any emotional shock could be fatal. Please, for her sake, you must keep her calm.”

I looked at the man, my gaze cold. I felt the rib in my chest ache; every time Sharon used that sacrifice as a shield, the bone felt like a splinter moving closer to my heart.

As long as she doesn’t throw herself in my way, I won’t bother her,I said.

The doctor blinked, his mouth hanging open slightly. He was clearly confused by the lack of concern and the absence of the frantic devotion I had displayed for five years.

Before he could stammer out another plea, my phone vibrated in my pocket.

It was Foster.

I excused myself and stepped out to the hallway

Alpha Jensen, the craftsman’s voice was thin, trembling so badly I could hear the rattle of his breath. About those cufflinksthe one with the eye watermark. Did you receive them?

I did,I said. My hand instinctively moved to the small velvet box in my pocket. I gripped it tightly, the corners digging into my palm.

Natalie had designed them for me; even if she had died hating me, these were the last pieces of her heart I could hold. They were the result of what she was designing that night.

I’m sorry, sirbut they were a personal commission for another client. That client is here right now, and he has the signed order form. He’s demanding to pick them up; could youcould you return them?

The world seemed to stop as Cairn let out a low dangerous snarl in the back of my mind.

Another client?

I clutched the box so tightly I heard the velvet lining groan. Natalie had designed these for me. She had to have. Who else was there? Who else did she know well enough to use the sacred stone for?

The thought was a physical blow to my chest, sharper than any wound I’d taken in battle.

Where is the client?I rasped, my voice sounding like it was being dragged over gravel.

He’s here with me,Foster answered.

I’ll be right there. But I won’t hand them over. Ask him how much he wantsI’ll double ittriple it. I’ll buy the rights to the design.

These were Natalie’s last works in silver. I would not let a stranger walk away with them. I would not let another man wear the legacy of the woman who was supposed to be mine.

Suddenly, a voice broke through the line. It wasn’t Foster’s; it was a cold, deep baritone that carried a weight of authority that made my own wolf growl in warning.

I’m not selling, Alpha Jensen,” the voice said. It was smooth, dark, and carried a sharp edge of mockery that set my blood on fire. They were custommade for me, return what belongs to me.”

I frowned, my mind racing. The voice was oddly familiar in a way I couldn’t quite grasp.

We’ll talk in person,I snapped.

No need. I don’t want to meet you. If I did, I’m not sure I could stop myself

The line went dead.

I stood in the hospital lobby, the phone still pressed to my ear long after the line had gone silent. My heart was thudding against my ribs, a frantic, rhythmic beat.

Foster,I said, my voice frigid. What did the client look like?

AlphaI don’t have the words,” the craftsman whispered. He wasvery handsome, and he was definitely an Alpha.

I looked down at the cufflinks in my hand as I pulled one out and squeezed the pin so hard it jabbed into my thumb. I didn’t flinch as the sharp metal pierced my skin.

I watched a single drop of dark blood drip onto the silver, staining the wolf’s eye.

Natalie’s last design.

I didn’t care who the stranger was, I didn’t care about his threats. I wanted the cufflinks, and I would have them.

Hansel,I called out. My gamma stepped forward immediately, his face set in a grim line.

Alpha?
