I had been lying in this bed for hours, waiting for the one sound that mattered: the heavy, steady footfalls of Jensen’s designer shoes.

He hadn’t come.

“Where’s Jensen? Why isn’t he here yet? Did you even tell him my moon sickness spread?”

I didn’t realize I was screaming until the nurse flinched. I reached out, my fingers like claws as I snagged her arm, digging into her skin.

The nurse jumped, her eyes wide with a terror that usually satisfied me, but today it only made me want to slap her. “Alpha Jensen has already been here, Ms. Sharon,” she stammered, trying to peel my fingers back. “He… he discussed your condition with the pack doctor.”

At once, the tension in my chest snapped. A warm, triumphant glow flooded my veins. I let go of her arm and sank back against the pillows, a slow, predatory smile spreading across my face.

I had the pack doctor in my hands, he’ll do whatever I tell him to.

I knew the rib would hold him. In his heart, I’m still the one he has to protect. The moment the monitors started beeping, the moment I “collapsed,” he would drop everything.

“So where is he?” I asked, my voice dropping to a breathless, eager whisper. I smoothed my hair, making sure a few strands fell “weakly” across my forehead. “When will he come see me? Is he in the hallway? Tell him I’m awake.”

The nurse frowned. “Ms. Sharon, the Alpha has already left.”

What did you say? That’s impossible! He couldn’t have left without seeing me.

I shoved the covers off, my legs tangling in the IV lines. “If he came to ask about my condition, that means he still cares. He wouldn’t leave without seeing me. You’re lying, aren’t you? You’re lying to me!”

I saw her hand move toward the call button, and the rage I’d been suppressing since the warehouse fire boiled over. I raised my hand, the IV tape ripping painfully from my skin.

“You bitch! Did you block Jensen from coming in? Did you stop him?”

I lunged, my palm itching to strike the fear right out of her eyes, but she was faster. She bolted out of the room, the heavy door swinging shut behind her.

I swept my arm across the bedside table as the water pitcher shattered against the floor. The flower vase, which I hated, toppled, spilling murky water over my expensive slippers.

I screamed until my throat burned; everything was supposed to be perfect now. Natalie was gone, and I was the only woman left in his world So why was he treating me like this?

“Sharon! Oh, my poor baby, what’s happened?”

The door flew open, and my mother rushed in. She looked tired as she hurried forward to hold me.

“Mom!” I collapsed back into her arms, the fake tears finally becoming real ones. “Natalie- that bitch–even in death she’s still stealing Jensen from me. He was here, Mom. He was in this building, and he didn’t even come to my room! What do I do? Get someone to dig up Natalie’s grave! Scatter her ashes in the river! I want her gone!”

My mother blinked, her face pale. She let out a long, troubled sigh and pulled me closer, stroking my hair with a hand that was trembling

“Sharon, listen to me. You’ve been wronged, I know. But you can’t touch Natalie’s grave, don’t be foolish. You should never have let her die in that fire, and by killing her, you forced Jensen into a state of eternal guilt. That’s where you made your mistake.”

I pulled back, turning to look at her.

“Mom, I hated her so much. You don’t understand,” I spat, not caring if the nurses heard.

“She turned out to be the Keeper! Can you believe the nerve of that girl? As long as she was around, Jensen had to rely on her to keep the pack thriving. I couldn’t stand her having any more contact with him.”

The memory of the press conference–the humiliation of almost being exposed as a fraud- made my whole body shake. I had wanted the name Keeper, and that wretched, wolfless woman had stolen it from me.

“Mom, if you hadn’t mixed us up eighteen years ago, then all of Natalie’s accomplishments would’ve been mine! I wouldn’t have had to kill her for a title that was rightfully mine!”

I shoved her angrily, my strength returning with my spite. My mother stumbled, a flicker of genuine guilt crossing her face.

“Sharon, I didn’t know there had been a mix–up back then!” she whispered, looking toward the door.

“Well, she’s already dead, so what’s the point?” I waved her off irritably. The room was messed up, and it was driving me mad. “What you should be doing is helping me win Jensen back; ever since that warehouse collapsed, he’s been treating me like an intruder. Even now,

lying here ‘dying,’ he hasn’t come to see me once.”

My mother’s face grew even more solemn. She sat on the edge of the bed, her voice dropping to a panicked whisper.

“Sharon, listen to me carefully. On my way here. I overheard your father. The Nightfang pack has just withdrawn its alliance from our pack. Every protection and assistance- canceled.”

I froze. The room seemed to grow cold. “Jensen canceled the alliance? Over a dead girl?”

“Yes. Your father’s already rushed to the pack officials to beg for a meeting, but we don’t know if Jensen will even see him. If the pack cuts us off we are ruined. The other packs will hunt us like strays.” She grabbed my hands, her eyes pleading.

“Sharon, Natalie’s death hit him hard. He’s an Alpha; he can’t erase five years of a woman in his bed overnight. For now, you must endure and be the gentle, dying mate he remembers. And most importantly… you need to sleep with him. If you can get pregnant with his child, then your position as his Luna will be secure. A dead woman can’t compete with his heir.”

‘She was right.‘ Kasha let out a low growl in my mind. Jensen is a man of duty; a pup would bind him to us in a way the rib never could.‘

“Mom, the nurse said he came to talk to the doctor,” I said, my mind racing. “That means he still cares about the debt… Here’s what we’ll do–go home for now. I’ll stage another ‘crisis‘ tonight to draw him back here, and I’ll make sure he stays. If I can get him into this bed, I’ll have him forever.”

My mother brightened, a relieved smile breaking through her worry. “Good. I believe in you, Sharon. Tell me what you need from the house.

“I know what to do. Now go–I need to think.” I waved her off, watching her leave with a sense of renewed purpose.

I lay back, closing my eyes, imagining Jensen’s hands on me.

The door opened again, I didn’t bother to open my eyes.

“What is it now, Mom? I told you I need to think”

“Injection,” the voice said, deep, calm, and utterly familiar.
