Baron’s POV

Dock the boat, rest up, and be ready to sail back at my command,I ordered, as I turned to the captain.

Yes, Alpha.

I stepped onto the island; the staff bowed deeply as I passed.

Greetings, Alpha Baron.

Where are the others?I asked.

The butler kept pace, his head bowed. Madam hasn’t risen yet, but Sir should be in the back hills.

My brows drew together; the back hills were dangerous for a child, full of jagged limestone and dense brush.

Without a word, I pivoted toward the rear of the island.

Damn, Dad’s back,I hear him mutter from afar.

He scrambled to shove his treasures into his pockets before bolting toward the villa.

Even at four years old, the resemblance was haunting. He had my jawline, my stubborn brow, but those eyesthey were Natalie’s.

stumbled, his boots catching in the undergrowth, and he went down

Sean!my voice cracked like a whip across the clearing. facefirst with a dull thud.

OW!

Hes

Before he could scramble up, I was over him. I reached down and hauled him up by the back of his collar, dangling him like a disobedient wolf cub.

He hung there.

Didn’t I tell you to stay out of the back hills? Do you think my words mean nothing?

Sean stopped flailing and looked me dead in the eye, his lower lip jutting out in a way that made my chest ache with a sudden, sharp memory of Natalie’s defiance.

Put me down, Baron!he yelled, using my name as he always did when he was trying to prove his maturity. If you’re so tough, fight me fair! Bullying kids doesn’t make you a man!

I felt a short, cold laugh escape my throat; the brat had my temper. I don’t need a fouryearold to tell me what makes a man. For that comment, you’re standing at attention for two hours the moment we hit the porch.

I’m not doing it!Sean shot back, his face turning a bright, angry red.

He suddenly screwed up his features, and a second later, the theatrics began. Boohoo! I’m just a poor little cabbage! If my mommy were here, she’d never let you bully me like this! You’re always busy, barely show up once every two weeks, and the second you do, you punish me! Are you even really my dad? Boohoo!

He let out a series of exaggerated wails, but I watched him carefully. Not a single tear touched his cheeks as he was peeking through his fingers to see if I was softening.

Normally, it worked. Normally, the mention of Mommymade my heart stall, and I’d set him down with a heavy sigh and a warning.

But today was different. Today, I was here for a reason that changed everything.

Instead of setting him down, I tucked him under my arm like a parcel and strode toward the villa.

Oh, so you’re upset I don’t spend enough time with you? Fine. Today I’ll make sure you get all my attention. I need to straighten you outotherwise, when your mommy sees you acting like this, she’ll be horrified.”

Sean’s crying stopped instantly. He hiccupped, his small body going rigid.

Huh?

He blinked, confusion replacing the fake sorrow.

Every time he’d brought up his mother before, I had gone quiet.

He and his sister Susie had long ago accepted the unspoken rule: Mommy was a ghost.

But now, my features were soft. I felt a faint, genuine smile tugging at the corners of my mouth.

Daddy! Hey, DaddyMommy’s here, isn’t she?Sean twisted in my grip, his eyes wide and frantic. She’s come to see us, hasn’t she?

I didn’t answer.

How could I explain the truth? Five years ago, I had requested the most precious thing from Natalie as payment for Jensen’s life. I had demanded her ribs and eggsI had wanted a piece of her to keep.

She had resisted at first; I can still I see her trembling and asking if there was another way.

Leaveor give me what I want,I’d told her.

I’d expected her to balk, to walk away. But for Jensen, she had agreed.

And yetI was glad. Looking at the weight of my son in my arms, I was profoundly glad. I had hidden them away on this island, never allowing Natalie’s name to touch their world, because I couldn’t give them a whole family.

Until now.

My plan had always been simple: if Natalie and Jensen lived happily, the twins would grow up never knowing her. I would be their only world.

But if Jensen had discarded her like he had let her burn, she would be here making the family complete.

Baron! I’m talking to youow!

I flicked a finger against his forehead, a sharp, light tap.

Calling me by name again? Where is your upbringing? If your mommy heard you, she’d blame me for raising you like a little
