“Natalie, the kids already agreed.” Baron said, his voice dropping into that low, persuasive rumble. “They want to help you… you don’t need to keep resisting.”
“No!” The word tore from my throat, raw and jagged. “I don’t agree, and if you insist on using them, then I’d rather not have the skin graft at all. Let me look like this… let me be a monster.”
Baron flinched as if I had struck him. He stepped closer. “Natalie, listen to reason-

“Reason?” I laughed, trying to keep my sob muffled. “Reason says I haven’t done a single thing for them. I didn’t carry them in my womb, I didn’t hold them when they cried, and I didn’t even know their names until an hour ago. What right do I have to let them suffer through something as agonizing as having their skin harvested? I can’t accept it, Baron. I just can’t.”
I looked into his eyes before continuing, “Baron, if you really like me, then please respect my decision.”
He stood frozen, and I could see the frustration coiling in the muscles of his jaw.
“Natalie, your condition can’t wait,” he snapped, his patience finally fraying. “The infections are recurring… you need the graft as soon as possible. If I go out now to search for an external match, there’s no guarantee I’ll find one that your body won’t reject instantly. Do you understand the risk? You could die.”
“I don’t care,” I whispered, my gaze unwavering. “I still won’t let the children go through that, not for me.”
I don’t deserve them… They need a mother who would love them, not someone who uses their skin graft.
Baron started to panic; I could see it in the way his pupils dilated and the way his hands clenched at his sides.
“Stop being so stubborn!” he roared.
I shoved his hands away and tried to swing my legs over the side of the bed.
The movement was pure agony; I felt the wet, hot slide of blood as my healing wounds split wide open, staining the white linens.

Baron rushed forward, his brow furrowed in a mixture of horror and fury. “What are you doing? Lie down!”
“I’m leaving,” I gasped, my voice trembling but laden with a heavy finality. “I’m grateful you saved me, Baron, truly. If I ever get the chance, I’ll repay you with everything I have–my life, my labor, anything. But starting now, I’m refusing your help. All of it… if the price of my face is my children’s flesh, then the debt is too high. I won’t pay it.”
I could feel the heat radiating off him. “Lie down!” he growled, his voice a low, dangerous vibration.
atalie. I risked my life pulling you out of that fire. From the moment I carried you through those flames, your life became my responsibility. You don’t get to just give up now… I won’t allow it.”

“Then I’ll starve myself,” I said.
The room went deathly silent… It was the ultimate threat, and we both knew it. In my weakened state, a few missed meals would be a death sentence.
Baron looked like he was about to lose his mind. “You’re really going to go this far?”
“Yes,” I said, looking at the photo he had shown me. “They’re my children. I’ve failed them for four years…
I won’t let them suffer a pain they should never have to bear just because their mother was careless enough to get caught in a fire.”
Baron’s shoulders finally slumped.
As I looked at him, I realized he didn’t have the heart for it either. He had only suggested it because he was terrified of losing me.
He let out a long, ragged sigh. “Fine. You win, Natalie. You always do.”
He turned away, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I promise I won’t use the kids‘ skin, but I’ll need time. I’ll have to search the black markets and the international registries for a suitable donor. I might be away for a few days to oversee the transport myself.”
He paused, his voice turning stiff. “And if the children are too noisy while I’m gone, I can send them back to the island.”
“No,” I said immediately. “I want to see them. Please.”
Baron clenched his jaw. “Fine. Whatever you say. Now, can you please lie down properly? Look at your wounds! They just started healing, and now you’ve torn them open again. What, do you think I have nothing better to do with my time than redress the same injuries every hour?”
“Are you mad at me?” I asked softly, but he didn’t answer. He just tightened a bandage with a bit more force than necessary.
I reached out with my one relatively mobile hand and hooked my pinky around his. It was a small, childish gesture, but it stopped him in his tracks.
“If I cook something nice for you later,” I whispered, “when I’m better… will that make up for it?”
Baron looked at my finger hooked around his, then up at my face. “You’d have to cook for me for a whole year to even start making up for the gray hairs you’ve given me today,” he grumbled.
“Okay.”
