I looked through the glass at her–she was a map of tragedy, her body covered in thick layers of gauze that hid the raw, weeping tissue beneath.
Every time I adjusted her morphine pump, my heart twisted. The guilt was a physical weight that grew heavier with every hour I spent watching her suffer.
If my sister, Phantom, hadn’t failed… if she hadn’t been lured away… Natalie wouldn’t be this broken. I was the sister of a failure, and in the pack, failure was a debt that was usually paid in blood.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I pulled it out, expecting a status update from the lab, but my blood turned to ice the moment I saw the sender.
It was the same mysterious address from earlier the text contained an address and a gallery of images.
I scrolled through them, my breath catching in my throat.
My sister, Phantom.
She was slumped in a chair, her eyes wide, unfocused, and vacant.
Someone hadn’t just stripped her; they had hollowed her out.
A/sob threatened to break from my chest, but I bit my lip until I tasted copper.
Before I could even begin to process the horror of what had happened to her, a sharp, heavy knock sounded at the reinforced door of the ward.
I quickly stepped out into the hallway, wiping my eyes and pulling my professional mask back into place.
I found myself face–to–face with Finn.
“Finn?” I blinked, surprised by his presence so far from the perimeter. “What are you doing here
a breach?”
I stood rigid in front of the door, trying to stop him from coming in.
Finn
as leaning against the cold concrete wall, his posture loose and casual.
His eyes were cold, staring right through me at the crack of the door to Natalie’s room unreadable hunger.
“How is she?” he asked. His tone was flat, lacking emotion.
“Not great,” I replied, my

I looked for a flicker of sympathy in him, but instead, he narrowed his eyes, a flicker of something dark and resentful dancing in his pupils. “Even if she gets the surgery… what are the odds of it actually succeeding? She’s half–dead already.”
“If the Alpha performs it himself, the chances are better than with anyone else.” I said firmly. “Why do you ask?”
Finn gave a vague, dismissive shake of his head.
“No reason. It just seems like our entire operation is on hold because of her. The pack is restless, the work is piling up, and Jensen is running himself into the ground over a woman who might not even make it. It makes me wonder if she’s really worth the cost of the Alpha’s sanity.”
The air in the hallway seemed to drop ten degrees; I felt a protective fury as I glared at him.
This wasn’t just a woman; this was someone who had been burnt in a fire, and this was a personal attack on the woman I was sworn to protect.
“Finn, regardless of her chances, you know how important Natalie is to the Alpha. If I were you, I’d avoid making her your enemy. He doesn’t forgive those who look at his weaknesses with greed.”
“Enemy?” Finn snorted, a bitter sound that echoed off the sterile walls. “She’s just a disfigured freak, Yvonne. A ghost in a bed… What’s there to be jealous of? She’s nothing but a pile of bones and burnt skin.”
With that, he turned on his heel and stormed off, his footsteps heavy and aggressive.
I stood frozen; that wasn’t just frustration, it was pure hatred.
I looked back at my phone, at the drugged, broken images of my sister, and then at the back of the man who had just insulted a dying woman.
A terrifying realization took root in my mind… If Finn hated Natalie this much, could he have been the one to lure Phantom away? Was the traitor the man standing right behind the Alpha?
I didn’t hesitate as I pulled up my messaging app and typed everything–the photos of Phantom, the location I had received earlier, Finn’s visit, and every venomous word he had uttered.
“Alpha, Finn was just here. He called her a disfigured freak. He’s looking for a reason to let her go

A small figure, dressed in a full clean–room dress, was standing at the foot of the bed.
I gasped, nearly dropping the chart I was holding.
“How did you get in here? The locks are coded!”
It was Susie.
The little girl looked up at me, pressing a tiny finger to her lips in a perfect imitation of silence.

“Don’t wake Mommy,” she whispered. Her voice was sweet and innocent, yet it carried an odd weight. “I just want to see her.”
She tiptoed to the bedside, her small hands gripping the rail. I watched her, bracing myself. I expected the child to burst into tears at the sight of the bandages, the tubes, and the raw, discolored skin of Natalie’s neck.
But Susie didn’t cry.
Instead, I watched as the little girl’s innocent, doll–like expression vanished.
Her eyes, usually wide and curious, sharpened into anger.
For a split second, Susie didn’t look like a four–year–old child. She looked like a version of her father.
She looked at Natalie’s injuries with a cold, calculating intensity that made the hair on my arms stand up.
