Chapter 73 The Scent Of Doubt
Chapter 73 The Scent Of Doubt
Baron’s POV
The steam from the bathroom was still curling into the air when Sean finally stepped out.
I didn’t hear him approach at first; I was too deep in the dark.

“What’s with that face? I’m just poisoned, not dying. You look terribler,” he said, grinning at his own word.
I looked up at Sean standing there in his pajamas, his hair damp and sticking to his forehead. He had that half–smirk on his face, the one he used when he was trying to prove he was tougher than he actually was.
“Sean.” My voice came out coldly.
I was already in a foul mood, the kind of irritability that made my wolf want to snap at anything that moved.
This little brat still had the nerve to joke around–he didn’t even seem to take his own life seriously.
Instead of being cowed, Sean reached out and patted my head. He did it slowly, acting like some wise old man comforting a troubled youth.
“Come on, it’s just cyan powder,” he said, his tone dismissive. “Nothing I can’t handle; you know I’ve always liked messing with your poisons.”
As he spoke, he moved toward his ‘treasure chest‘–the locked box of vials and tinctures I had allowed him to keep under the condition of strict supervision.
He pulled out a small, exquisite porcelain bottle, poured a single, charcoal–colored pill into his palm, and popped it into his mouth without a second thought.
I stared at him, momentarily speechless.
“I haven’t even tested that antidote yet,” I muttered, staring at him wide–eyed.
“It’ll work!” Sean chirped, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “I made it myself.”
Now I regret teaching him so much about toxins…
He walked over to the nightstand, drank a full glass of water, and then looked up at me. “Daddy, was the powder why the skin compatibility results were wrong? Did it mask my markers?”
“Yeah” I replied, my voice tightening. “But for now, you can’t do the test again. I’m worried the toxins might transfer to your mom. Until I’m sure your blood is clean, don’t go into the sterile room. I can’t risk contamination.”
Sean groaned, the sound theatrical and loud.
He flopped back onto the bed, though he was careful to avoid the side where I’d found the powder.

“Daddy, you’re so cruel! Can’t I at least look at her through the glass? I haven’t seen her since this morning.”
“You’re poisoned. Act like it,” I snapped.
I stood up to leave; the clock was ticking.
Sean’s sample was useless for now, but Natalie’s skin graft couldn’t wait any longer.
I had to find a suitable donor and fast… If I can’t find one in the Pack, I’d have to start looking at the ‘Black Market‘ list.
Just as I turned toward the door, I felt a tug. Sean had grabbed my pinky with his small hand.
I paused, looking back. “What now?”
Sean didn’t say anything at first… He just rummaged through his treasure chest again, his small fingers clinking against glass vials. He pulled out a small, amber bottle and handed it to me.
“I overheard you telling Shauna to keep an eye on Uncle Finn,” he said, his voice becoming serious. “But Shauna’s too busy… She’s a doctor, not a spy. Besides, they know each other too well. If he really did it, he’ll know she’s watching. And if he didn’t… wouldn’t that hurt your relationship?”
I felt a slight surge of pride, though I kept my face cold. “A kid like you meddling in grown–up business now?”
He gave me a proud smile. “I don’t care who it is,” Sean said with a tone that carried power. “Anyone who threatens you or Mommy or me is going to pay.”
He cleared his throat, trying to regain his composure. “Anyway, that stuff in the bottle–it’s a pheromone- based tracer. Colorless and odorless to humans and most wolves. Sprinkle a bit on Finn’s coat or his skin, and I’ll be able to track his movements through the estate’s ventilation sensors. No need to follow him… No need for Shauna to act suspicious.”
“You sure?” I asked, sounding doubtful. “How would you track him?”
Sean snorted, an indignant sound. “Baron, don’t underestimate me. The tracer would be reflected on the mal… In this field, I’m the expert! Ow!”
Before he could finish bragging, I reached out and flicked his forehead hard.
“What did you just call me?”
“Daddy!” Sean instantly fell in line, rubbing his forehead with a pout.
He showed me the map, and I could see the tracer’s location on the map.
Satisfied, I took the bottle and tucked it into my vest. “I’ll take the bottle; make sure you send me his movements directly to my secure line. Until I’m back, you’re to rest properly. Cyan powder doesn’t clear in one go, it lingers. If you need anything–and I mean anything at all–you contact me.”
He smirked, “even if I want chocolate.”

I made a move to smack him, but he dodged it with a smile, “Okay, okay. Got it. Go save Mommy”
Sean nodded, burying himself back under the clean blankets of the guest bed.
I ruffled his damp hair one last time before finally walking out and closing the door.
But the moment the door clicked, I heard it–a muffled, wet sound from inside.
I hesitated, my hand on the handle.
Through the door, I heard Sean rush to the bathroom and the sound of him retching.
I waited, my heart hammering. A moment later, I heard the sink run.
I didn’t go back in… I knew what he was doing..
It was the body’s way of purging the bound toxins. It was a brutal process, but as I caught his scent through the crack in the door, it was cleaner.
I returned to my own quarters to fully disinfect myself. I stripped off my clothes and threw them straight into the incinerator bin.
I scrubbed my skin until it was raw, then changed into a fresh set of black scrubs,
I picked up the surgical kit needed for Natalie’s potential debridement and headed for the sterile room.
My mind was a whirlwind of Finn’s betrayal and Sean’s resilience.
I reached the medical wing, and to my surprise, the guard wasn’t standing at attention.
Yvonne was slumped over in the chair next to the door–fast asleep.,
Immediately, every instinct I possessed screamed. I went on high alert, dropping the surgical tray onto a side table with a clatter.
“Yvonne! Wake up!”
I grabbed her shoulder, shaking her, but her head just lolled to the side.
