Chapter 75 Shadows From The Past
Yvonne’s POV
I stood before the Alpha, watching the way his eyes searched mine.

There was a look in his gaze I hadn’t seen often–a flicker of something that wasn’t his usual cold stare.
For a second, he wasn’t the “Witch Doctor” or the Alpha of the pack. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.
I knew who he was thinking of.
My sister.
Phantom used to face life with that same spark before the silence took her.
Looking at him, I could tell he was shocked by my decision.
“Yvonne, people change,” Alpha Baron said, his voice dropping to a low, somber register. “I still want you to think this through. Donating skin is a sacrifice that stays with you forever; I’m going to have Shauna come take over here for a while. Come with me to the lab… maybe it was just the extractor malfunctioning.”
I could tell he still couldn’t believe my skin would match Natalie’s… Even I couldn’t believe it.
It was impossible, but with everything happening now… I wasn’t surprised.
I nodded, not trusting my voice, and waited as he summoned Shauna.
Shauna arrived shortly after, she didn’t ask any questions.
The walk to the lab was silent.
Once inside, he didn’t just use the extractor this time. He brought out the vials and the needles.
He not only collected another skin sample from my arm but also drew several tubes of my blood.
I remained calm and cooperative from beginning to end.
I watched the dark red liquid fill the glass, thinking of Natalie lying in that bed. If my blood was the key to her waking up, I’d give every drop.
Once we were done, he set the vials in the centrifuge and turned to me.
His voice was low, echoing in the quiet lab.
“It’ll take some time to get the results. I want you to really think about this, Yvonne. If the samples do match, and you are truly willing to donate… from that moment on, you’ll be my sister. As long as I’m alive, no one will ever be allowed to lay a hand on you. You will have the protection of the Alpha’s name.”
My eyes grew wet before I could stop them.

Phantom had been my only family… Since the news of the fire, since I realized my sister was gone. I had been truly alone in the world.
The idea of having a brother, of having a home that didn’t require me to be a lab assistant, was like a dream I didn’t dare have.
But I was also self–aware… I knew my place.
“Alpha, you don’t need to do that,” I said, wiping my eyes with the back of my hand. “I want to donate to Natalie because I can tell how much you care about her. She’s the mother of your kids… and what happened to her was partly because my sister failed to protect her. I don’t need special treatment or a new name. I’m doing this because I choose to.”
“Don’t talk like that,” he countered sharply. “We still don’t know everything about what happened with Phantom. Even if we put that aside, you’re your own person, Yvonne. You should live this life for yourself, not carry someone else’s debt. Everyone is their own being… Just because Phantom was your sister doesn’t mean you owe her. So go think it over, give me your answer when the results come in.”
He finished speaking and waved me off, letting me leave the lab first.
I walked out, my heart feeling heavy but strangely warm. I had never met a leader as kind and principled as him.
But just as I was turning the corner of the lab corridor, I caught a glimpse of a shadow.
It was a flicker of movement, a dark shape darting behind the pillar at the end of the hall.
“Who’s there?” I called out, my hand instinctively reaching for the holster at my hip.
I gave chase immediately; by the time I reached the spot where I’d seen the shadow, the hallway was
empty.
I frowned, my heart racing. That figure… even in that split second, it looked familiar.
Turning back to head toward my room, I spotted something on the ground by the wall.
A small, white rectangle.
I bent down and picked it up–only to realize it was an old, faded photo. It was a picture of me and my sister from when we were children, standing in front of our former pack house before we were exiled. We were both smiling, unaware of the world that was about to break us.
My breath caught.
Each of us had our own copy of this photo; it was our only treasure.
Mine had always been on my nightstand in my bedroom.
So whose was this one?
My heart began to pound against my ribs as I rushed back to my quarters, my mind screaming. I burst

into my room and looked at the nightstand.
The photo was there. My copy was still in its frame, exactly where I’d left it.
I looked at the one in my hand… It was identical. The same creases, the same worn edges.
Phantom’s copy.

The room felt like it was spinning. If this was Phantom’s photo, how did it get in the hallway? She was dead.
Just then, my phone lit up with a sharp ping.
I grabbed it, my fingers trembling so hard I almost dropped it. A message was on the screen from an unknown sender.
“Your sister was so good to you all her life. And now she’s dead without answers. Don’t you want to know what really happened to her?”
“Who are you?” I typed back frantically.
“Where did you get this photo? Is she alive?”
I hit send, but a red exclamation point appeared.
Message failed.
I tried again.
Failed
I looked back at the original message, but before my eyes, the text began to dissolve.
Within seconds, the bubble was gone. The thread was empty, erased without a trace.
Someone had hacked my phone. Someone was in the house.
Who were they?
What connection did they have to my sister?
What had Phantom really gone through in those final moments at the villa?
My mind was a chaotic storm; I wanted to run back to the lab and tell the Alpha, but as I looked at the empty phone screen, a cold realization settled over me.
There was
no proof.
The photo could be explained away as something I’d dropped. If I told him now, I would just look like I was cracking under the pressure.

1 frowned deeply, clutching the photo to my chest.
I took a deep breath, forcing my heart rate to slow.

I washed and disinfected my hands, tucked the photo into my pocket, and returned to the sterile room. I had to stay focused.
Shauna was still there, leaning over a monitor near Natalie. When she saw me enter, she started to speak, but then she paused, her eyes searching my face.
“Yvonne, what’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
She reached out, concerned, and touched her cool hand to my forehead.
I gently pulled away, shaking my head.
“I’m fine, Shauna. Just… tired.” I looked at Natalie’s pale face through the glass.
“Shauna… I remember you said you were the one who brought my sister into the pack.”
Shauna’s expression softened. “I did. She was excellent. Hardworking too. She told me once that she had a little sister to take care of, so she didn’t have the luxury to rest or complain. I really admired her for that. “Phantom.. she was a damn good sister, Yvonne. One of the best I’ve ever seen.”
The praise was genuine, and it cut through me like a knife.
I opened my mouth to ask her if there was any chance that she had survived or if there were secrets she’d kept.
But the words died in my throat. If I asked, I’d have to explain the message… I’d have to reveal the shadow in the hall.
