Sharon’s POV

My heart was thundering against my ribs as I looked at my mother, who was prepared to auction my life away for a failing Pack and a few business accounts.

I didn’t wait for her to finish whatever poison she was about to spill. I quickly cut her off, stepping between her and Jensen, trying to fake my weakness but obviously failing.

I forced a weak, trembling smile onto my face as I turned to him.

Jensen, pleasemy mom has been sick for days; the Pack elders told me the stress of our warriors leaving has been hurting her heart. You know the pack is my parentswhole life, and now that the alliance is broken and things are like this, they really can’t take it. No matter what my mom did or said in her grief, please don’t hold it against her, okay?

Jensen’s expression remained as hard as granite, but I didn’t stop.

I knew his weakness. I knew the name that would shatter whatever front he’s showing.

I know you’re grieving Natalie’s death,I said, my voice barely a whisper with artificial sympathy. How about thisI’ll go home and personally see if there’s anything of Natalie’s left in the Summers family home. If I find anything, and I mean anythingI’ll bring it to you, alright?

I watched him.

It was like watching a statue crack.

He didn’t really want to hear me speak earlier, but my words stirred something deep in the darkness of his eyes.

Alright,Jensen said, his voice raspy. As long as you can bring me something of Natalie’sI’ll consider letting the Moonreign Pack back into my pack’s circle of influence, and I’ll restore the defensive perimeter.

My mother lit up at once, her face transforming from desperation to greed.

But inside, I felt physically sick. My stomach churned with a bile so bitter I almost gagged.

Why?

Why should that bitch Natalie, even after being reduced to ash, still hold a place in Jensen’s heart? I had been the one by his side for five years. I was the one who had savedhim, yet he would trade the fate of an entire Pack for a few of her dusty keepsakes.

But I didn’t dare act rashly, I had seen the look in his eyes when he talked about the firehe was a wolf on the verge of turning

feral.

My mother, however, had no such filter. She was practically vibrating with joy.

Jensen, of course we still have Natalie’s things!she chirped, ignoring the way I was digging my nails into her arm. I promise I’ll bring them to youI even have her baby swaddles from when she was little, I kept them in a cedar chest!

The wild joy in her eyes nearly made me lose my composuredamn, I wish my wolf was active.

She was willing to sell my secrets, my life, and my status just to get her paws back on Jensen’s protection. She was no mother of

mineshe was a traitor.

I grabbed her arm with a grip that I hoped would bruise and forced another brittle smile.

Mom, let’s go home nowdon’t bother Jensen while he’s working. We have a lot of searching to do.

She nodded quickly, her eyes still on him. Alright, I’ll go right away.

I supported her, playing the part of the dutiful, sickly daughter, and turned to leave.

I just needed to get her out of here before she opened her mouth again.

But Jensen’s voice stopped us.

Sharon.

I froze, my back to him.

Aren’t you unwell?he asked. I turned, and for a second, I saw a flicker of the old Jensen. If it’s serious, you should check into the hospital. Don’t keep running around outsideit’s too easy to catch an infection on your bruised hands. How are you doing without your wolf?

Hearing his concern, and then remembering how much more he cared about a dead girl’s swaddle cloth just moments earlier, I could no longer lie to myselfJensen didn’t hold me in his heart. He held a debt.

I had begged him before, on behalf of our pack, and he hadn’t budged an inch. He had watched us wither, but now? He was willing to help us just for a few of Natalie’s scraps.

But I forced a smile that felt like it would crack my face.

I’ll be fine, Jensen. I’m trying to survive without her, and I hope the witch doctor will accept to do the ritual. Besides, my parents are in this position because of me. I need to be here for them.

A flicker of guilt passed through his eyes.

Good.

Let it burn him.

Don’t worry,he said finally, his voice carrying across the lobby so the staff could hear. You’re still my mate, Sharon. Your pack won’t fallI promise that.

The air in the lobby shifted instantly.

The secretaries and guards, who had spent the last few days treating me like a nuisance, suddenly straightened their backs. People at the pack knew I was his mate, but since Jensen had recently forbidden anyone from calling me Luna, they’d assumed i was just a pretender.

Now that he acknowledged me, their eyes shifted to respect and fear.

froze. Was he finally admitting my status?

Was the Luna seat truly mine again?
