Knowing him, I’m sure he wasn’t afraid of the knife. In fact, in that moment, I realized he almost wished the blade had been a few inches to the left.

He wanted the release of death… he wanted to escape the monster he had become.

But I hadn’t finished him.

“You do deserve it!” My voice came out as a snarl. “You deserve to be torn apart, piece by piece, until there is nothing left but the memory of your betrayal.”

I reached into the inner pocket of my jacket and pulled out a manila envelope.

1 hurled it at him as it slid across the floor, stopping inches from his trembling hands.

“Read it,” I commanded.

Finn’s fingers were slick with blood as he tore open the envelope.

I watched his eyes track the lines of the medical report, his pupils widening

The color drained from his face, and suddenly, a violent cough racked his frame, and blood spurted from his lips, staining the document.

Even as his body convulsed in a fit of shock, he clutched the paper.

“Baron, please… this isn’t real, right?” he gasped, “tell me this isn’t real! Tell me the lab made a mistake!”

“It’s real, Finn.” My voice was cold, “Phantom was pregnant. She left this report in her locker before she went on that feat mission… I was already preparing a mating ceremony for you two- a type of ceremony fitting for my second in command and the Pack’s finest scout I was going to surprise you when you returned but you destroyed her. You destroy your own child before they

I knew Finn’s history.

He had grown up without a present father and a dead mother, he had been raised to become the pack’s Beta and had carried responsibilities far too heavy for a child.

He knew better than anyone the agonizing void of being alone in the world.

With Phantom, he had finally found an anchor. He had sworn to me once that if he ever had a child, they would never suffer what he had. He would have loved that baby with everything he was.

And yet, Phantom had carried his legacy, and he hadn’t even looked closely enough at her to see the change.

He slumped against the lockers as the paper fluttered to the floor, his eyes fixed on nothingness.

I turned away from him, unable to look at the wreck of a man I had once trusted with my back.

My voice dropped low, “even if I had slept with Natalie, it was one night, nothing more. Did you really think I’d lose my mind over a woman? Did you think I’d let the empire crumble for a single night of weakness?”

Finn’s bloody lips trembled, a manic light flickering in his eyes. “Because of me… I knew… I knew you liked Natalie long before that night. I’m not blind, Baron… I’ve watched you for years. If five years ago she hadn’t fallen for that pathetic excuse for a man, Jensen… you would have claimed her then.”

“Shut up!”

My fury exploded as I kicked Finn across the floor, the force of it sending him sprawling into a pool of his own blood.

But it wasn’t enough.

I seized him by the collar, dragging him up until we were nose–to–nose.

“You were my brother! I never hid anything from you. Even my feelings – I never concealed them because I thought you were the one person who could understand. You betrayed me, fine… that is between us. But why involve Natalie? Why make her a target? Do you know that if you hadn’t exposed my feelings to our enemies, she might never have been targeted by the foreign packs?”

“She would have!” Finn shouted, his eyes wild.

“Baron, even if I hadn’t said a word, Natalie’s fate was sealed! From the moment she fell for Jensen, she was doomed!”

He coughed, blood spattering my shirt, but he didn’t stop.

“Phantom died because of her! The family I could have had – gone because they were tasked with protecting the keeper who wran too foolish to see her own mate’s knife! Tell me why, Baron! Why do you love such a foolish woman? And don’t tell me I have the right to hate her?”
