Rise of the Banished She-Wolf (Evelyn) novel Chapter 124

Chapter 124

Evelyn

The whirring sound of helicopter blades cut through the silence, and I lifted my head weakly. After sending the distress signal, I’d managed to drag Ethan’s unconscious body from the basement to an open area where we could be spotted. My shoulder throbbed mercilessly, the silver poisoning spreading through my system like liquid fire.

I squinted against the wind as the helicopter descended, relief washing over me when I recognized Edward and Aiden jumping out before it had fully landed.

Evelyn!Edward rushed toward me, his usually composed face etched with concern. We got your signal! What happened? The last we knew you were at the chemical plant, then your location suddenly changed to here.

Long story,I mumbled, gesturing to my brother’s unconscious form. He helped me escapethen tried to keep me prisoner.

Edward’s gaze fell to the bloodsoaked bandage on my shoulder. Silver bullet?

I nodded weakly. Got it out, but the poisoning

We need to get you to the medical center immediately.Without warning, Edward lifted me in his arms. The sudden movement sent waves of pain through my shoulder, and I bit back a scream.

Take him too,I said, nodding toward Ethan. He knows thingsabout my family.

Edward barked orders at his men, who quickly bound Ethan and carried him to the helicopter. As we lifted off, my thoughts drifted to Devon. The last I knew, he was heading to the chemical plant where Austin had set off silver bombs.

Devon,I whispered, my voice barely audible over the helicopter noise. Is he-

He’s alive,Aiden said, his face grim. But it’s not good, Evelyn.

My heart constricted painfully. The silver bombs?

Aiden nodded. He inhaled a lot of the silver dust. They’ve got him in a specialized chamber at the medical center.

I closed my eyes, fighting back tears. He’d come for me. Despite the danger, despite everything, he’d come for me.

Jason was waiting when we landed at the medical center, his usual stoic expression replaced with visible worry.

How is he?I asked the moment Edward helped me down from the helicopter.

Jason hesitated, his eyes flickering to my bandaged shoulder. You should get that looked at first.

How is Devon?I demanded, my voice stronger than I felt.

He’sJason ran a hand through his hair. He’s in the hyperbaric chamber. The silver dust damaged his

lungs. They’re doing everything they can.

The world seemed to tilt beneath me. I need to see him.

Evelyn, you need medical attention yourself, Edward said firmly.

I need to see him, I repeated, taking a wobbly step forward.

Jason caught my arm when I stumbled. Let’s get you inside first. Then we’ll talk about Devon.

Inside the medical center, I borrowed Edward’s phone and called Felix. My hands shook as I dialed, leaving bloody fingerprints on the screen.

Felix,I said when he answered. ‘I need you. Medical center. Now.

Twenty minutes later, Felix burst into the treatment room where a nurse was attempting to clean my wound.

Jesus, Evelyn,he breathed, taking in my pale face and the bloody bandages. What happened?

Silver bullet,I said through gritted teeth as the nurse probed the wound. I got it out, but-

Let me see.Felix gently moved the nurse aside and examined my shoulder. His expression darkened. This needs special treatment. The silver has contaminated the tissue. He turned to the nurse. Get me the wolfsbane extract and silver neutralizing agent from the restricted supply.

As Felix worked on my shoulder, applying a poultice that burned worse than the bullet had, I told him about Devon.

He’s in the hyperbaric chamber,I finished. Silver dust in his lungs. I need to help him, Felix.

Felix looked at me like I’d lost my mind. You can’t even lift your arm, Evelyn. How exactly are you planning to help?

I know more about silver poisoning treatment than anyone here,I insisted. I’ve been researching it for years.

You’re in no condition to pick up a scalpel,Felix argued, securing a clean bandage over my wound.

Then assist me,I pleaded. I can’t just sit here while he-My voice broke. He was there because of me. If he dies, I’ll never forgive myself.

Felix’s expression softened slightly. Let me finish treating you first.

I nodded, relief washing over me. Once Felix had completed the treatment, applying special herbs to counteract the silver poisoning, I insisted on contacting Devon’s family for consent to use an experimental treatment.

We need a family member to sign off on the treatment,I told Jason. The silver neutralizing agent hasn’t been widely approved yet.

Jason nodded grimly. Owen is on his way.

Owen Hall arrived thirty minutes later, his face a mask of cold fury when he saw me. So you’re the reason my brother is fighting for his life, he said

without preamble.

I flinched but held his gaze. Yes. And I’m also his best chance at survival.

With some experimental drug?Owen scoffed. You want to use my brother as a guinea pig?

The treatment has been in clinical trials within the werewolf community for three years, I explained, my voice steady despite the pain radiating from my shoulder. It’s specifically designed to neutralize silver poisoning in the respiratory system.

And if it fails?
