Chapter 139

Evelyn
My stomach churned violently. Leaning against a concrete pillar, I tried to steady myself, but the nausea won out. I doubled over and emptied the contents of my stomach onto the pavement.
“Evelyn!” Olivia called, her heels clicking rapidly as she approached.
I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand, embarrassment washing over me. “I’m fine,” I managed to say, though the trembling in my voice betrayed me.
Before Olivia could reach me, the distinctive scent of pine and wilderness filled my nostrils. A car door slammed, and heavy footsteps approached rapidly.
“Evie.” The deep, commanding voice sent a shiver down my spine.
I turned to see Devon striding toward me, his face a mask of controlled fury and concern. Without hesitation, he scooped me into his arms, ignoring the fact that my clothes were soiled with vomit.
‘What are you doing?” I asked weakly, stunned by his sudden appearance. “How did you-”
“Not now,” he cut me off, his jaw clenched tight as he carried me to his sleek black SUV.
‘I can walk, I protested, though my body betrayed me by melting against his solid chest. The familiar scent enveloped me, bringing a strange comfort amid the chaos of my emotions.
Devon carefully placed me in the passenger seat and buckled me.
The drive to his mansion passed in tense silence. I stared out the window, unable to process the events of the day or Devon’s unexpected appearance. When we finally pulled into the driveway, Devon came around to my side and lifted me out before I could protest.
‘I can walk now,” I insisted as he carried me through the front door.
“You’re shaking,” he replied simply, his grip tightening slightly.
Once upstairs, he set me down in his bedroom and stepped back, crossing his arms over his broad chest. “You need to change.
I looked down at my clothes, now stained with vomit and sweat. “I’ll go to my room.”
“Your hand is still injured, and you’re trembling. Let me help you.” It wasn’t a request.
My wolf stirred inside me, restless and agitated by his commanding presence. ‘I’m not one of the cubs in your pack who needs their Alpha to take care of them,‘ I snapped, suddenly irritated by his overbearing attitude,
His eyes flashed with something dangerous. “You went to see your father without telling me. The man who sold you to Viper.”
“I don’t need your permission.”
In one swift motion, Devon lifted me effortlessly again and strode into the adjoining bathroom. “Devon! What are you doing?” I exclaimed, struggling against his iron grip.

sit straight. ‘Olivia was there, and he was sedated.”
“He nearly shifted anyway!‘ Devon’s voice rose to a thunderous level, echoing off the bathroom tiles.
I looked away, unable to deny it. “I needed answers. I needed to hear him admit what he did to Patrick.”
And was it worth risking your life for?” Devon demanded, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the bathtub.
“Yes,” I said firmly. “I deliberately provoked him so he would tell me the truth about Patrick’s death. It worked.”
Devon released a guttural growl, the sound rumbling from deep in his chest. It wasn’t human–it was pure wolf, the Alpha asserting dominance. The sound sent a shiver down my spine, my own wolf instinctively cowering.
“Are you seriously going to try the Alpha intimidation routine on me?” I challenged, lifting my chin defiantly even as my inner wolf urged submission.
His eyes flashed golden for a split second, the wolf breaking through his human control. Without another word, he turned and switched on the water, adjusting the temperature before walking out and slamming the door behind him.
I sat there, the warm water slowly filling the tub around me, a strange mixture of frustration and something else swirling inside me.
Twenty minutes later, Mrs. Whitmore knocked gently on the bathroom door. “Miss Gray? May I help you get cleaned up?”
“Yes, please,” I called back, grateful for her presence.
She helped me undress and bathe, careful of the bandages on my injured hand. “That’s a nasty wound,” she commented, eyeing the silver burn that hadn’t fully healed.
“It’s healing,” I assured her.
Mrs. Whitmore shook her head. “You gave Mr. Hall quite a scare today. I haven’t seen him this upset in years. His wolf was practically taking over.”
I stared at her, surprised by the revelation. “Where is he now?”
‘In his study, trying to calm down.” She helped me out of the tub and wrapped a plush towel around me. “You should talk to him once you’re dressed. He was worried sick when he found out where you’d gone.”
After drying my hair and dressing in comfortable clothes, I went downstairs to the kitchen. I prepared a cup of Devon’s favorite coffee, adding the special herbs I knew would help calm his wolf. With the steaming mug in one hand, I made my way to his study door.
I could hear him inside, his voice sharp as he berated someone over the phone. “I don’t care what it takes. Get it done by tomorrow or find another job.”
I waited until the sound of his voice stopped before knocking lightly on the door.
‘I’m in a meeting. Whatever it is can wait,” came his terse reply.
I knocked again, more insistently this time.
The door flew open, and Devon stood there, his face thunderous with anger. When he saw me, the golden glow in his eyes slowly receded, leaving behind
