Chapter 150

Devon

057

After Evleyn left, I immediately reached for my cigarettes. With a quick flick of my silver lighter, I lit one and took a deep drag, letting the smoke fill my lungs as I gazed out at the Seattle skyline. The conversation I needed to have with Edward wasn’t going to be pleasant, and I was stalling.

Evelyn doesn’t like people smoking around her,Edward said from behind me, his voice irritatingly calm.

I turned, unable to suppress the sardonic smile that formed on my lips. I know that, so I rarely do it in front of her.I took another deliberate drag, blowing

the smoke in his direction.

The tension between us was palpable. My wolf paced restlessly inside me, demanding action. Without warning, I crossed the room in three quick strides and landed a powerful punch directly to Edward’s face.

His head snapped back, blood trickling from his split lip. He clearly hadn’t expected the attack, but his reflexes kicked in quickly. He wiped the blood with

the back of his hand, his eyes narrowing.

What the fuck was that for?he growled.

For thinking you have any right to tell me what Evelyn likes or doesn’t like,I snarled back.

Edward lunged forward, his fist connecting with my jaw. The impact sent me stumbling backward, but I recovered quickly. We circled each other like predators, trading blows that would have hospitalized normal humans. My tie hung loose around my neck, and I could feel my perfectly styled hair becoming a disheveled mess. Edward’s pristine white shirt was now spattered with blood from his split lip.

After several minutes of brutal fighting, we both collapsed onto the plush carpet, breathing heavily. I was the first to speak, my voice rough but determined.

From now on, everything related to Evelyn is my responsibility. I’ll protect her.

Edward spat blood onto the carpet. You think you’re the only one who cares about her? I want to protect her too!

I laughed bitterly as I pushed myself up to a sitting position. Protect her? You’re the one who bought her from Viper three years ago! You created Viper. That island was yours. You’re the beginning of all her tragedy.

Edward’s face paled. The island was mine, yes. And I knew Viper. But what I feel for Evelyn is real,he insisted, his voice cracking slightly. It was her appearance in my life that made me realize all the wrong I’d done. Since then, I’ve sworn to protect her.

And you think that makes everything okay?I demanded.

Edward shook his head, wincing from the pain. No. But these past three years, I’ve beenprotecting her. She knows that. Consider it my atonement if you

want.

We stared at each other, a new understanding forming between us. I stood up, straightening my tie and smoothing down my hair as best I could. After a moment’s hesitation, I extended my hand to him.

Don’t let her suffer anymore. We’ll protect her together.

Edward looked at my hand before taking it firmly. I pulled him to his feet, and we stood there, bloodied but resolved, before heading back to find Evelyn.

Chapter 150

Evelyn

I was deep in conversation with Aiden when the door opened. This dish is amazing, you should try-My words died in my throat as I saw Devon and Edward enter, both sporting bloody lips and disheveled appearances.

I jumped to my feet, rushing toward them. What the hell happened?I demanded, eyes wide with alarm as 1 examined their injuries.

Devon shrugged casually. Just a little exercise.

Exercise?I repeated incredulously, looking between the two men. Their clothes were wrinkled, Devon’s tie was askew, and both had bruises forming on

their faces.

Edward wiped a trickle of blood from his lip and smiled. That’s right.

What kind of exercise leaves you both looking like—*

I’m starving, Devon interrupted, heading toward the table where my halfeaten meal sat. Mind if I finish this?

I watched in disbelief as Devon casually sat down and began eating my leftovers. Edward stood awkwardly by the door, still dabbing at his split lip.

I should get you something to eat too,I said to Edward, reaching for my phone. I’ll call Ryan. He makes a special meal for-

Already taken care of, Devon cut in, holding up his own phone. I texted him while we were on our way back.

True to Devon’s word, a knock at the door announced Ryan’s arrival less than twenty minutes later. He carried several containers of food, the rich aroma filling the room. Devon moved to greet him, pulling out his wallet and extracting a black card.

For your services, Devon said, extending the card to Ryan.

Ryan shook his head, refusing the payment. No need, Mr. Hall. This is Jack’s way of saying thank you.

I stepped forward. Jack’s very grateful for what Lydia taught him about incorporating healing herps into traditional recipes. The dishes have become quite popular at the restaurant.

Ryan hesitated before finally accepting the card with a nod of appreciation. Thank you, Mr. Hall. Miss Gray.

After Ryan left, Edward settled at the table and opened the containers. The scent of herbs and spices filled the room, and his eyes widened slightly in
