I stood by the window of my hospital room, feeling the afternoon sunlight warm against my skin as I watched a nurse pack the last of my medical supplies into a bag.

After the initial critical period passed, the doctor insisted I stay for observation, and before I knew it, two weeks had gone by.

“Ready to go home, Evelyn?” Richard’s deep voice drew my attention to the doorway.

I smiled at the sight of Devon’s father. The Alpha King himself had come to escort me home–a gesture that spoke volumes about my place in the Hall family now.

“More than ready,” I replied, reaching for my jacket only to have Richard take it and hold it open for me.

“Devon wanted to come himself,” Richard said, as if reading my thoughts. “I ordered him to finish the security protocols for the new lab

first.”

I nodded, understanding the unspoken message. Richard was displeased that his son hadn’t protected me better. The old Alpha’s eyes softened as they fell on the scar peeking out from my collar.

“You’ve endured enough pain for one lifetime, little wolf,” he murmured, his weathered hand gentle on my shoulder.

The ride back to Hall’s Mansion was quiet but comfortable. Richard didn’t press me with questions or empty reassurances. Instead, he

simply kept me company, occasionally pointing out changes in the city that had happened during confinement.

When we arrived at the mansion, I noticed something odd. Richard parked closer to the entrance than usual, and there was a strang

of activity around the normally bustling household.

“Everyone’s busy today,” Richard said, his tone suspiciously casual. “Let me help you inside.”

As we approached the front door, Lily suddenly poked her head out, grinning widely before ducking back in.

“Wait here a moment,” Richard instructed, stepping inside and closing the door, leaving me standing alone on the doorstep.
