“Evelyn.” Her voice cracked slightly. “I… I need to speak with you.”

I kept my expression neutral, though my heart raced with conflicting emotions. “We’re speaking now.”

Kate glanced around nervously at the students passing by. “Somewhere private, please. It’s important.”

Part of me wanted to walk away, to leave her standing there just as she had abandoned me years ago. But something in her demeanor stopped me. This

wasn’t the Kate who had orchestrated my downfall.

I’m not going to a coffee shop or restaurant with you,” I said firmly. “If you want to talk, we can go to Sterling Mansion.”

Surprise flickered across her face. “The old house? You’re staying there?”

“It’s my home now.” The words carried more weight than I intended.

Kate hesitated, then nodded. “Alright. I’ll follow you there.”

‘I’ll drive,” I replied coldly. “Your condition doesn’t look like it should be behind a wheel.”

The drive to Sterling Mansion was silent and tense. Kate stared out the window, occasionally rubbing her pregnant belly with trembling fingers. I kept my eyes on the road, trying to ignore the questions swirling in my mind.

When we arrived, Kate stood at the entrance, looking at the familiar stone facade. “It looks the same,” she murmured. “Yet everything’s different.”

I led her inside without responding. Ryan appeared in the hallway, his eyebrows rising slightly at the sight of Kate.

“Miss Evelyn, do you need anything?” he asked, his tone professional but his eyes conveying concern,

“We’ll be fine, Ryan. Thank you.”

Once we were alone in the main sitting room, Kate collapsed onto the sofa, her composure crumbling. Tears streamed down her face as she looked at me.

‘I know I have no right to come to you,‘ she sobbed. ‘Not after everything. But I don’t know where else to go.”

“What happened, Kate?” I kept my voice even, refusing to be swayed by her tears so easily,

“The Stone family,” she choked out. “They… Sebastian found out I was pregnant and everything changed. He became cold, controlling. His family treats me like I’m… defective because my bloodline isn’t pure enough.”

I watched as my once–proud sister knelt on the floor, her hands clutching the hem of my jacket.

*Please, Evelyn. I’m begging you to forgive me,” she cried. “I didn’t understand… I never knew what it was like until now. What being abandoned feels like. What it means to have your own family turn against you.”

“And what about me?‘ I shot back, my voice cold. “You accused me of things I never did, let me endure years of pain and suffering. All it would have taken was one person to speak up for me, to save me. But there was no one. No one at all.”

pulled away from her grasp, motioning for her to follow me. We walked through the house to the garden, where I pointed to an overgrown, neglected

corner.

“Do you remember that spot, Kate? My voice was barely above a whisper.

Kate’s face paled as recognition dawned.

“Three years ago, I was dragged there by our father’s men. Right after you told everyone I’d lost control and attacked a human.” My fingers curled into fists. I was beaten until I couldn’t stand. Then they told me I was no longer part of the Gray family. That I was banished from pack territory forever.

Kate flinched at my words.

“And now you come to me for help?‘ I laughed bitterly. “When it’s convenient for you?”

“I was wrong,” Kate whispered, fresh tears streaming down her face. “I was so jealous of you your intelligence, how Grandmother favored you. The family pressured me to be perfect, to compensate for not having a bloodline like yours. I let that poison me.”

My anger surged, and I felt my wolf stir within me. My eyes shifted, turning golden, and my nails lengthened into claws. It had been so long since I had this feeling–the raw power felt overwhelming yet strangely liberating.

Relief washed over Kate’s face as she nodded frantically. “Anything. I’ll do anything you say.”

Back inside, I instructed Ryan to prepare a special nutritional meal for Kate and arrange for appropriate supplements to replace the harmful medications she’d been taking.

“I want to be clear,” I told Kate as she ate hungrily. “This doesn’t mean I forgive you for what you did to me. This is for those three innocent lives you’re carrying.”

Kate nodded, tears of gratitude in her eyes. “I understand. But I promise you, Evelyn, I’m not the same person anymore. I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” I warned her. “And if I discover you’re lying to me about anything, unspoken.
