Rise of the Banished She-Wolf (Evelyn) novel Chapter 29

**Where Falling Leaves Whisper Stories Written In Silence by Ryn Jace Reed**
**Chapter 29: Rise of the Banished She-Wolf**

Just as I was trying to gather my thoughts, another vehicle glided to a halt nearby—a sleek, polished black sedan that practically radiated the aura of old money. My heart plummeted as I recognized the familiar silhouette of my grandfather stepping out first, followed closely by Victoria. This was the last thing I needed at this moment.

“Evelyn, are you alright?” My grandfather’s voice, though laced with concern, held an edge of authority as he approached me. His weathered features were etched with lines of worry, and for a fleeting moment, I felt a flicker of comfort.

However, the moment his gaze fell on Olivia, his demeanor shifted drastically. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a steely glare. “Hall family,” he uttered, each word clipped and frigid, as if he were pronouncing a sentence.

Confusion washed over me as I darted my eyes between them. “Grandpa, you know Mrs. Pike?” I asked, incredulity tinging my voice.

He remained silent, merely shooting Olivia a look that could freeze fire. “Let’s go inside,” he commanded, cutting off any further conversation.

Victoria, ever the shadow of judgment, trailed behind us, her posture rigid. She didn’t even glance my way, but as she brushed past me, her voice dripped with disdain. “I hope you haven’t brought disgrace to the Gray family name,” she whispered, her words sharp enough to draw blood.

Once inside the conference room, the atmosphere was thick with tension, suffocating and oppressive. The air felt charged, as if a storm were brewing just beneath the surface. Detective Blake, a stern-faced woman with an air of authority, took control of the situation immediately, her presence commanding respect.

Mrs. Foster, undeterred by the gravity of the moment, attempted once more to lay blame at my feet. But Detective Blake swiftly interrupted her. “Mrs. Foster, we already have your statement. Now we need to hear from Ms. Gray,” she said, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Victoria sat rigidly with her arms crossed, her expression a mask of ice. “If you’ve done something wrong, Evelyn, just admit it now. Don’t drag the Gray family through more scandal,” she said, her voice low yet dripping with disdain.

“Victoria, enough!” Grandfather snapped, his grip tightening around his wolf-head cane, the wood creaking under the pressure of his frustration.

Drawing in a deep breath, I felt a surge of determination. “I think everyone here deserves to hear the truth,” I declared, my voice steady despite the turmoil within.

Olivia, sensing the weight of the moment, reached over and squeezed Lily’s hand reassuringly. Lily, gathering her courage, straightened her spine and prepared to speak, her eyes glinting with resolve.

Detective Blake confirmed what I had already known—that Jessica had indeed kidnapped Lily with malicious intent. She laid out the evidence meticulously, each piece fitting together like a puzzle.

“We have proof that Jessica hired men to assist in the kidnapping,” she explained, her voice steady as she displayed phone records and bank transfers. “Text messages indicate clear premeditation.”

“Hall,” my grandfather interjected sharply, his voice slicing through the tension, “I believe matters concerning my granddaughter would be better handled by the Gray family.”

I stood frozen, caught between these two powerful men, increasingly bewildered by their mutual animosity. What was I missing? What was hidden beneath the surface of their interactions?

As the meeting drew to a close, Grandfather turned to me, his expression softening slightly. “Come back to the family territory for a few days, Evelyn. We have important family matters to discuss this week.”

Devon’s jaw clenched tightly, his frustration palpable. “She’s still recovering from her injuries. She needs professional care, not to return to a place where no one treats her as family,” he countered, his voice firm, yet laced with concern.

“William,” Olivia intervened gently, her voice a calming presence amidst the storm, “perhaps Evelyn should decide for herself.”

I felt like a pawn caught between two powerful families, the weight of their expectations heavy on my shoulders. Why did it seem like Devon and my grandfather loathed each other? What was the invisible thread that tied their pasts together, and why was I left in the dark?

As I glanced from Devon to my grandfather, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a deeper story woven into the fabric of their lives—one that I desperately needed to uncover. What kind of history did they share?
