Rise of the Banished She-Wolf (Evelyn) novel Chapter 31

**Where Falling Leaves Whisper Stories Written In Silence by Ryn Jace Reed**

**Chapter 31**

**Evelyn: 58**

Seated in the conference room, I made a conscious effort to appear at ease, though the palpable tension in the air was almost electric. Sera, sitting beside me, meticulously arranged her documents, her movements smooth and self-assured, a stark contrast to the atmosphere surrounding us. Across the table, Reynold’s icy gaze was locked onto Sera, his hostility unmistakable.

“I didn’t anticipate your presence so soon, Cooper,” Reynold remarked, his voice laced with a subtle menace that sent a shiver down my spine, awakening my instincts.

Sera flashed a smile, teeth bared but devoid of warmth. “It’s amusing how our paths intersect whenever you decide to harass innocent individuals, Morgan.”

Next to Reynold, Jessica’s mother, Mrs. Foster, glared daggers at me. The expensive fragrance she wore couldn’t conceal the acrid scent of her disdain.

“That girl is anything but innocent,” she spat, her eyes narrowing as they landed on Lily, who sat on my other side. “She’s tainted my daughter and shattered her relationship.”

I maintained a neutral expression, even as I felt my silver-gray eyes harden in response to her venomous words. Olivia was present as well, a silent observer.

“Let’s concentrate on the matter at hand,” Reynold began, his tone shifting to one that felt rehearsed, as if he were a seasoned actor delivering lines. “This is merely a civil dispute. Ms. Gray has allegedly seduced Brian Miller, Jessica Foster’s boyfriend, resulting in emotional turmoil for my client’s daughter.”

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “That’s a grave accusation. I trust you possess some form of evidence?”

“We don’t require evidence when everyone is aware of what kind of girl you are,” Mrs. Foster snapped, her voice dripping with contempt. “You’ve been back in Seattle for just a few weeks and are already stirring up trouble. This is evidently a recurring theme for you.”

“A recurring theme?” I replied coolly, my curiosity piqued. “Do enlighten me.”

Mrs. Foster’s expression twisted with self-righteous indignation. “Girls like you, who throw themselves at taken men—”

“Mrs. Foster,” Sera interjected smoothly, her tone unwavering, “let’s clarify: your daughter assaulted my client, inflicting serious injuries that necessitated hospitalization. She then orchestrated a kidnapping and subsequent assault. These are criminal offenses, not mere teenage squabbles over a boy.”

Lily leaned forward, her voice firm. “Brian’s a notorious player who pursues every girl he encounters. He’s already cycled through half the cheerleading squad. Evelyn had nothing to do with his interest in her.”

Mrs. Foster’s face flushed with anger. “Even if you hail from the Hall family,” she shot back, directing her ire at Lily, “my daughter Jessica is my everything. I will fight for her with every ounce of my being.”

Reynold placed a soothing hand on Mrs. Foster’s arm, his demeanor shifting as he turned to Olivia. “Ms. Hall, perhaps you could mediate this situation? Surely we can arrive at a resolution without further discord.”

Olivia finally looked up, her blue eyes—so reminiscent of Devon’s—flashing with barely contained disdain. “The Hall family does not negotiate with those who harm our loved ones. We certainly don’t ‘mediate’ when the facts are so glaringly evident.”

Sera nodded, opening a folder with a flourish. “The evidence is irrefutable. First incident: unprovoked assault. Second incident: kidnapping and attempted assault involving hired thugs. The police reports, medical records, and security footage corroborate this. We came to this meeting under the impression you wanted to apologize, not to hurl ludicrous counter-accusations.”

Reynold’s smile was devoid of warmth, a mere facade. “You’re quite young to be handling such a delicate case, Ms. Cooper. I haven’t yet heard of your reputation.”

“That’s your misfortune,” Sera replied coolly, her confidence unwavering. “My track record speaks volumes.”

Reynold leaned back, the fabric of his expensive suit rustling slightly. “Let’s be pragmatic. What would it take to make this issue disappear, Ms. Gray? Name your price.”

A wave of disgust surged through me. “You genuinely believe this is about money?”

“Everything has a price,” Reynold asserted, his gaze calculating. “Especially for someone in your… financial predicament. A student residing in an apartment she can barely afford, with a tarnished reputation. We can make this painless.”

Olivia stood gracefully, a smile spreading across her face. “I think this calls for a celebration! There’s a restaurant nearby with private dining rooms. My treat.”

About half an hour later, we found ourselves nestled in a cozy private room at The Garden, one of Seattle’s most upscale establishments.

Lily had already ordered nearly half the dessert menu—mostly the rich, decadent options.

“This place has the best chocolate-covered bacon in the city,” she declared, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

I turned my attention to Sera, who sat across the table. “Thank you for your assistance today. I’m curious, though—how did you become involved in my case?”

Sera exchanged a quick glance with Olivia, a silent communication passing between them. “I specialize in these types of… sensitive cases,” she replied, her tone measured.

“What Lily means is that I have connections,” Lily interjected quickly, her enthusiasm bubbling over. “I know a ton of people! Seattle’s smaller than you think.”

I nodded slowly, my skepticism rising. There was something she wasn’t revealing, a piece of the puzzle that remained elusive. Just as I was about to probe further, the door to our private room swung open.

Devon stood in the doorway, his tall frame filling the space entirely. His blue eyes found mine instantly, intense and searching, igniting a whirlwind of emotions within me.

“Sorry I’m late,” he said, his deep voice sending an involuntary shiver down my spine. “I hear congratulations are in order.”

The atmosphere in the room shifted dramatically. Olivia smiled knowingly, Lily suddenly became engrossed in her dessert menu, and Sera straightened in her seat, a hint of anticipation in the air.

As Devon settled into the empty chair beside me, his familiar scent of pine and wilderness enveloped my senses, grounding me even as my mind raced with questions. He had stormed out in a fit of anger just yesterday, and now here he was, sitting right next to me again. I couldn’t decipher what he was really thinking, the tension between us thickening the air around us.
