**Where Falling Leaves Whisper Stories Written In Silence by Ryn Jace Reed**
**Chapter 41**
**Evelyn**
The shrill blare of my alarm sliced through the peaceful veil of sleep, yanking me from the depths of my dreams. My heart raced, pounding against my ribcage as the vivid memories of last night rushed back. Devon’s kiss was still imprinted on my lips, a lingering warmth that sent shivers down my spine. I could almost sense the intoxicating scent of pine that clung to him, mingling with the potent Alpha energy that enveloped me in that cramped elevator.
“Get it together, Evelyn,” I murmured to myself, shaking my head as if to physically dislodge the thoughts swirling in my mind. “This is not the time to lose focus.”
With a determined sigh, I swung my legs over the side of the bed and padded barefoot toward the bathroom. The mirror reflected my silver-gray eyes, unusually bright and alert this morning, betraying the turmoil within. I took a deep breath, splashing cold water onto my face in an attempt to quell the heat that crept up my cheeks at the mere thought of Devon.
After a quick shower, I glanced at my calendar, and a surge of adrenaline coursed through me. Today marked the second upgrade test for Dr. Anderson’s ambitious project, and the stakes felt higher than ever.
I opened my laptop, my fingers moving instinctively over the keyboard as I reviewed the programming I had worked on late into the night. A few minor errors caught my eye—nothing catastrophic, but enough to cause significant issues if left unattended. As I meticulously corrected the code, my fingers brushed against the silver scar on my arm, a stark reminder of my past and the secrets I had to keep hidden.
Once I was satisfied with the program’s integrity, I turned my attention to my closet, pulling back the hidden panel at the back. Inside lay the high-tech equipment I had meticulously gathered in preparation for this pivotal moment. Not a soul, not even Mrs. Whitmore, knew of this clandestine stash. I carefully extracted five laptops, arranging them in a semicircle on my living room table, transforming the space into a temporary command center for the challenges ahead.
With the last laptop set up, I dialed Mrs. Whitmore.
“You can skip cleaning the apartment today, Mrs. Whitmore. In fact, take a few days off,” I instructed, trying to keep my voice steady.
“Are you sure, Miss Gray? Is everything alright?” she inquired, concern lacing her tone.
“Everything’s fine. I just need some… time to myself,” I replied, the weight of my secret pressing heavily on my chest.
After hanging up, I whispered to myself, “This time, I can’t let anyone discover what I’m really doing. Especially not Devon…”
My fingers flew across the keyboards as I initiated the Aurora system test. However, as I delved deeper into the data, an anomaly blinked ominously on my screen within one of the key processing modules. Frowning, I attempted to diagnose the issue remotely, but the security protocols I had established were too stringent, blocking complete remote access.
“Damn it,” I muttered under my breath. “I’ll have to go to the research facility myself.”
With purpose, I packed the essential equipment into my backpack, pausing momentarily as I picked up my phone. Should I reach out to Devon? My thumb hovered over his contact, the temptation gnawing at me, but I ultimately shoved the phone into my pocket without making the call. I couldn’t risk him uncovering this hidden part of my life.
**16:34 Wed, Dec 10 M…**
After securing my apartment’s security system, I made my way to the research facility, where Aiden awaited me at the entrance.
“Aurora,” he greeted me with a nod, his expression serious. “The security systems are set up just as you instructed.”
He guided me into a specially shielded laboratory, designed to obscure any trace of my scent or presence.
“Make sure no one is aware of my presence here,” I instructed firmly. “The security must be absolutely airtight.”
“Of course,” Aiden replied, his tone reassuring. “As always. Not even Dr. Anderson knows your true identity.”
“Thank you for being so diligent,” I said as I began setting up my equipment. “Data security is paramount for this project.”
Dr. Anderson arrived shortly thereafter, his face lighting up at the sight of me.
“Our enigmatic genius has finally graced us with her presence,” he said cheerfully, a hint of admiration in his voice.
We dove straight into examining the error nodes within the DNA modification program. I could feel Dr. Anderson’s gaze on me, filled with awe, as I navigated through the complex code structures with an ease that surprised even me.
Upon arriving at the Hall mansion, I found my family already gathered around the dining table.
My father, Richard Hall, animatedly spoke about Lily’s college life.
“I met a really pretty girl at school. She’s super smart too!” Lily exclaimed, her enthusiasm infectious.
Richard looked intrigued. “You should invite her over for dinner sometime, Lily.”
“I will! We’re in the same class, and she helped me with this really complicated assignment,” Lily continued, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Olivia leaned closer to me, whispering, “You seem distracted, Devon. Thinking about Evelyn, perhaps?”
I didn’t reply, but my wolf stirred at the mere mention of her name. The memory of our kiss from last night replayed in my mind—the taste of her lips, the surprise in her silver eyes that soon darkened with desire.
My father cleared his throat, pulling my attention back to the table. “Speaking of relationships, Devon, I think it’s time we discussed your future. The Redwood alliance would benefit both packs. Emilia is a suitable match, and this union would finally allow me to step down as Alpha King.”
“I have no interest in an arranged marriage, Father,” I asserted firmly, my resolve hardening.
His expression darkened, anger radiating from him as his Alpha aura expanded in the room, filling the space with tension. “You’re over thirty now. If I hadn’t held this position for so long, someone else would have claimed it by now. You must solidify your claim through the Redwood pack!”
The atmosphere in the room became charged, thick with unspoken words. I stood abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor as I declared, “I’ll make my own choices regarding my future,” before storming out.
Once in my car, I pulled out my phone, my fingers trembling as I dialed Evelyn’s number, an urgent need to hear her voice surging within me. But the call went straight to voicemail.
I tried again, but the same result echoed back, a sense of unease settling heavily in my chest. Where could she be? Why wasn’t she answering?
