Rise of the Banished She-Wolf (Evelyn) novel Chapter 46

**Where Falling Leaves Whisper Stories Written In Silence by Ryn Jace Reed**
**Chapter 46**

A low, dry chuckle escaped from Devon’s lips as he turned to me. “That’s one way to put it,” he said, a hint of amusement in his voice. “Let me take you home. I think we’ve had our fill of excitement for one evening.”

As we drove toward the Moon Bay Apartments, the atmosphere in the car was initially subdued. The city lights flickered past us, casting reflections on the windshield while Devon skillfully maneuvered through the night traffic. My gaze was drawn to his profile, the way the light danced across his features, and I couldn’t help but wonder about the history he shared with Emilia. A burning curiosity ignited within me, and before I could reign it in, the question slipped from my lips.

“What’s the story with you and Emilia?”

Devon’s grip on the steering wheel tightened just a fraction, and I could sense a shift in his demeanor. “There isn’t much to tell,” he replied, his voice steady yet tinged with an underlying tension. “Our families have been allies for quite some time. When we were younger, there was an… expectation that we might form a stronger alliance.”

“You mean marriage,” I clarified, my heart sinking as I spoke the word. I fought to keep my tone neutral, but the knot in my chest tightened painfully.

“Yes,” he confirmed, a shadow crossing his expression. “It’s a common practice among the older pureblood families. But it was never something I agreed to.”

“She seems to think otherwise,” I pointed out, my voice barely above a whisper.

Devon shook his head slowly, frustration etched on his face. “Emilia sees what she wants to see. I’ve made my position clear to her multiple times.”

I absorbed his words, feeling an unexpected wave of relief wash over me. “And the jewelry division excuse?” I inquired, intrigued by the complexities of their relationship.

A small, almost playful smile tugged at the corners of Devon’s lips. “It’s not entirely an excuse. The division is small, but more importantly, I don’t mix business with personal complications. Emilia working at Hall Enterprises would be… problematic.”

Just as I was about to respond, my phone buzzed insistently in my pocket. I glanced at the screen and frowned.

“Marcus?” I murmured, the name slipping out with an edge of surprise. I answered the call, my heart racing. “Hello?”

“Miss Gray,” Marcus’s formal voice resonated through the speaker. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything important.”

“No, it’s fine. What’s going on?” I replied, trying to mask my rising anxiety.

“Your grandfather requests your presence at the Gray Enterprises shareholders’ meeting this Friday. As a major shareholder now, your input is required for several key decisions.”
