**Where Falling Leaves Whisper Stories Written In Silence by Ryn Jace Reed**
**Chapter 67**
**Devon**
As soon as Evelyn walked out of the room, I summoned Jason to bring Ethan to me. The oak-paneled study felt like a cage, the air thick with unspoken tension as I closed the door behind me. My heart raced, and I could feel the shift in my demeanor, my eyes morphing into a dangerous shade of gold, a reflection of the Alpha energy surging within me. Ethan stood by the window, his posture deceptively calm, but I could sense the underlying currents of anxiety rippling beneath his surface.
“What’s your real purpose in bringing Evelyn abroad?” I asked, my voice deceptively steady, though I was acutely aware that my words dripped with an accusatory edge.
Ethan turned to face me, his expression carefully crafted to maintain neutrality, but I could see the flicker of something deeper lurking behind his eyes. “I believe I’ve been transparent,” he replied, his tone even. “We’re here to handle family business regarding Gray Enterprises’ international assets.”
“Cut the bullshit,” I retorted, stepping closer, my body taut with restraint. The distance between us shrank, and I could feel the tension crackling in the air. “I know you’re working with Audrey White, and I also know she’s your lover.” I paused, letting my words sink in, watching for his reaction. “Interesting choice, considering she’s Victoria’s sister—Evelyn’s aunt.”
I noted the way Ethan’s eyes widened, the amber flecks in his irises intensifying as his wolf stirred restlessly beneath his composed facade. For a fleeting moment, his mask slipped, revealing the underlying turmoil before he regained his composure.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he replied evenly, though I could see the white-knuckled grip he had on the edge of the desk, a silent admission of his anxiety.
With a predator’s grace, I closed the gap between us until we were mere inches apart, my Alpha energy rolling off me in palpable waves, pressing against him like a physical force.
“Listen carefully,” I lowered my voice to a dangerous whisper, each word laced with menace. “If you dare to touch one hair on Evelyn’s head, I will personally ensure you experience pain like you’ve never imagined. You have no idea what I’m capable of when someone threatens what’s mine.”
The weight of my threat hung heavily in the air, a tangible force that crackled between us. I could see a flicker of fear flash in Ethan’s eyes before it was swiftly replaced by defiance, a mask he wore like armor.
Minutes later, he stormed out, and I watched him through the window, noting the direction he took with a sense of grim determination. Without a moment’s hesitation, I pulled out my phone and texted Jason.
“Follow him. Document any meeting with Audrey White. Send the photos to Jonathan.”
Devon’s gaze bore into me, searching for any sign of distress. “Does it bother you? Finding out about Jonathan’s affair?”
I let out a laugh that held no humor, a hollow sound that echoed in the stillness of the room. “The only person in that house I care about is Grandfather William. I stopped having feelings for that couple a long time ago.”
Devon nodded, his eyes softening as he took my hand in his. The warmth of his fingers wrapping around mine sent a flutter through my chest, a momentary reprieve from the chaos swirling around us. I allowed myself to bask in that warmth, even if just for a heartbeat, before reality intruded once more.
That evening, my phone rang, the screen lighting up with Ethan’s name.
“Audrey wants to meet you,” he said bluntly when I answered, his tone leaving no room for pleasantries. “Tomorrow morning, 10 AM at Café Laurent.”
The weight of his words settled heavily in my chest, a mix of dread and curiosity swirling within me.
