The Hamiltons were undoubtedly a family of immense wealth and contemporary influence. The Stewarts, in contrast, represented something different–old–world prestige, deep–rooted legacy, and a heritage that commanded a quiet, enduring respect.

This complementary standing was precisely why the two families had always moved in the same circles and why a union between them had long been considered an ideal match.

As the car continued along the drive, the main house came fully into view–a stunning example of Gilded Age architecture. The grand portico, supported by towering columns, conveyed an immediate sense of imposing grace. The morning sunlight glinted off the paned windows, making the pale stone facade glow. Everything about the estate spoke of a rarified, established world.

“Wow! This is like a museum! It’s absolutely breathtaking–I feel like I’ve stepped into another era. I love it!” Ruby couldn’t contain her excitement, her praise bursting out.

“I know it’s exciting, seeing it for the first time,” Naomi said kindly but firmly. “But try to dial it back a little, okay?” She had brought Ruby here and felt responsible for her conduct; she didn’t want to embarrass the Hamilton name.

Ruby looked at her, confused. “Why do I need to ‘dial it back‘? I’m just appreciating it.”

Cloudrise Manor was itself one of the most impressive modern residences in the city. Yet, behind these high stone walls existed a different kind of grandeur altogether.

Naomi lowered her voice to explain. “You’re here with me, so how you act reflects on the Hamiltons. Once we’re inside, please be polite. No gaping, no loud exclamations. If Mr. Stewart doesn’t address you directly, it’s best to just listen. Understand?”

She had visited here with her parents before. While she’d mostly stayed quiet, observing the adults, she’d picked up on the subtle, unspoken rules of conduct in such a formal household.

Hearing the list of dos and don’ts, Ruby’s excited mood deflated instantly. “There are that many rules? In a place this beautiful? Don’t the people who live here get tired of it?”

She genuinely couldn’t fathom why old families clung to such formality.

Seeing Ruby’s visible disappointment, Naomi softened. “Alright, don’t be upset. Remember why we’re here? You came to help me. Just go along with it for a little while. After we see Robert, I’ll treat you to a fabulous lunch, deal?”

succeeded, Naomi would certainly be generous. The thought of future handbags and jewelry sparked a secret thrill.

“Okay, okay. I know the plan. Don’t worry about me,” Ruby said, offering a reassuring look, her determination renewed.

Soon, the car rolled to a stop on the gravel sweep before the main entrance. A staff member promptly emerged to take the gift basket, and the house manager led them inside.

As they followed him through a series of elegant hallways, Naomi’s eyes discreetly scanned their surroundings, hoping for a glimpse of Matthew.

Ruby noticed and whispered, “What are you looking for?”

“Nothing,” Naomi murmured back.

It was a short walk to a sunlit conservatory where Robert was resting. “Mr. Stewart, Ms. Hamilton is here to see you,” the manager announced.

“Show her in, please,” came Robert’s voice, sounding a bit frail.

Naomi stepped forward with a warm smile. “Mr. Stewart, it’s Naomi. I heard you weren’t feeling well, so I wanted to come by and see how you’re doing.”

She gestured for the staff to place the supplements on a side table.

“Ah, Naomi. That’s very thoughtful of you, but you shouldn’t have troubled yourself. It’s just an old man’s nagging complaints, nothing serious,” Robert said, his eyes brightening at the sight of her. He had always liked Naomi.

From their first meeting, he’d found her to be a polite, well–mannered young woman from a good family. He was pleasantly surprised by her visit.

“Even if it’s a recurring issue, I was still concerned. I wanted to check on you personally. I’m glad to see you looking so well,” Naomi said, her tone gentle and sincere, her expression radiating genuine care.

Her words clearly comforted him. Robert gave a hearty, if slightly wheezy, chuckle.

“You know how to brighten an old man’s day, Naomi. If my grandson ever settled down with someone as considerate as you, I could rest easy.”

It was a constant source of private worry for him that Matthew seemed married to his work, showing no interest in romance whatsoever. Sometimes, Robert mused, he wondered about the boy’s priorities.

Hearing Matthew’s name, Naomi’s interest sharpened, though she kept her demeanor modest. “I’m sure Matthew cares for you deeply. He wouldn’t come to check on you every day if he didn’t.”

“He comes to pester me, is what he does!” Robert grumbled good–naturedly. “I tell him I’m fine, and he still drags a parade of doctors in here. Most annoying. He hasn’t arrived yet today. You should stay awhile–you’ll be able to say hello when he gets here.” Robert’s intention to encourage a match was hardly subtle; he very much wanted her to stay.
