Hearing his wife expose this in front of the children, Ryan knew she was likely using their visit to persuade him to cut back. He shot her a mildly annoyed glance. “It has nothing to do with the pipe. My throat’s just been a bit scratchy lately.”

He tried to brush it off. He’d enjoyed his pipe for decades, and he wasn’t about to let anyone make him quit now.

“Grandpa, why didn’t you tell me your throat was bothering you? I’ll have someone pick up some soothing lozenges right away,” Naomi said, already reaching for her phone.
