Then, studying Arabella with renewed interest, he asked, “I truly hadn’t expected you were the Hamiltons‘ biological daughter. But should address you as Dr. Macdonald now, or Dr. Hamilton?”
Hadn’t he just heard her name change? Why was he asking again?
But she couldn’t ignore him. Arabella rolled her eyes slightly. “I’ve returned to my family. My surname is Hamilton now. You can call me Dr. Hamilton from today.”
As she spoke, she lifted her chin just a touch, adopting a deliberately poised air.
Matthew found her expression rather amusing and couldn’t resist probing further. “Then perhaps Dr. Hamilton could clear up my confusion. The Hamilton family isn’t exactly short on funds, so why would you take on private medical cases?”
Before knowing who she was, he could have understood it as financial necessity. But now that didn’t add up.
Instead, it crossed his mind that she might have known about the Stewart–Hamilton understanding and deliberately gotten close to him.
After all, Naomi had always made her interest clear. As sisters, perhaps she was no different.
“What’s confusing about it? I do it because I can. Practicing medicine helps people and earns
his a little extra spending money on the side. Why wouldn’t I?” Arabella couldn’t grasp perplexity.
She did what she wanted to do. Was being a Hamilton supposed to stop her from seeing patients?
What odd logic…
“Spending money… I hadn’t taken Dr. Hamilton for a compassionate physician with such skill,” Matthew remarked, finding her answer a bit too casual.
After all, the Hamiltons wouldn’t blink at what amounted to pocket change in the four or five figures.
But that wasn’t what truly concerned him. He shifted the topic to the point on his mind. “Still, I should remind you–I’ll treat you fairly when it comes to my grandfather’s care. But if you have any… other ideas, I’d advise you to set them aside now.” Matthew’s tone was tactful but clear.

He didn’t need another person like Naomi becoming attached.
Hearing his words, Arabella understood his meaning immediately,

“I think you are overestimating the situation. If it weren’t for your grandfather’s trust and his request that I oversee his care, I wouldn’t have agreed to continue.”
“Good. I hope you mean that,” Matthew hoped he was indeed overthinking it. That would save trouble.
“In that case,” he added coolly, “I’d prefer you not mention my visit to the Hamiltons today to my grandfather.”
Hearing Matthew’s chilly tone giving her instructions, Arabella felt a flicker of irritation.
“Are you afraid to take responsibility for your own actions?”
Matthew hadn’t expected her to be so direct. “I take full responsibility for what I do. But you’re aware of my grandfather’s current condition. He cannot be agitated.
“I don’t want anything to jeopardize his recovery. In the end, it would be Dr. Hamilton who’d have to manage any complications.”
Since he’d dared to go to the Hamiltons, he wasn’t afraid of his grandfather learning about it eventually. But with Robert’s health still fragile, he didn’t want the stress of a broken engagement to cause a setback. That was the last thing he wanted.
Hearing his reasoning, Arabella allowed a faint, curled smile. “Then I should thank you for being so considerate.”
“You understand, then. You seem intelligent. Know what to share and what to keep to yourself.” Matthew ignored her hint of sarcasm and reiterated his point seriously.
“Understood. But what I say or don’t say is my choice. You don’t get to order me around.” Arabella made her own stance clear.
She wasn’t someone who could be easily directed.
Seeing her attitude, Matthew frowned slightly, a trace of annoyance surfacing. It was rare for anyone to speak back to him this way.
But he’d made his position clear. There was no need to say more. He turned to look out the window.
They didn’t exchange another word until the car arrived at the hospital.
Matthew and Arabella walked into Robert’s room together.

Seeing Arabella, Robert immediately brightened, “Dr. Macdonald, thank you for coming. Would you mind checking my pulse again?”
Robert had never enjoyed hospital stays. Feeling somewhat better than the day before, he’d specifically asked Matthew to bring Dr. Macdonald by if possible.
If he could be discharged to recuperate at home that would be ideal.
“Of course,” Arabella moved to his bedside and began her assessment.
A few minutes later, Robert watched her with hopeful eyes.
“Mr. Stewart, you’ve improved significantly since yesterday.” Arabella knew her treatment had helped him through the acute phase, but she didn’t take credit. She simply stated calmly, “Though it’s only been a day, your progress is quite positive.”
Hearing this, Robert’s face lit up. “Excellent. Does that mean I can go home to recover?”
Arabella looked at him knowingly.
So that was why he’d asked her to come today. It seemed he really couldn’t stand another night in the hospital.
“Mr. Stewart, while your condition has improved, the underlying issue hasn’t fully resolved. Without careful monitoring, there’s still risk.
“The reason for keeping you here is to ensure your safety should any complication arise. Once you’re fully stable, discharge will be the next natural step,” Arabella explained patiently, her tone both professional and gentle.
