When Jonathan saw it, his eyes widened in surprise. “Dad, could you take a look at this for me? Tell me what you think,” Arabella said, handing him a blue–and–white vase.
“Did you pick this up at the auction too?” Jonathan asked, unable to hide his astonishment.
“Yes, I got everything there together.”
“Alright, set it down on the coffee table first,” Jonathan suggested, not wanting to risk holding it himself in case it slipped–it would be a shame to damage such a piece.
Arabella placed it gently on the table, and Jonathan leaned in for a closer look, lifting it carefully to inspect the glaze and form.

“Arabella, you’ve given us such lovely gifts today. Did you use up
allowance? Tell your dad to transfer you some more later,” Florence said warmly, taking Arabella’s hand in hers.
Arabella replied with a nod.
They chatted for a little while before Arabella glanced back at her father. “You’ve been studying it for some time, Dad–have you noticed anything special?”
Finally, Jonathan set the piece down. His expression was both serious and amazed. “Arabella, this is the real deal. Unless I’m very mistaken, this looks like a mid–18th–century porcelain vase. It’s exceptionally fine.
“It must be worth a fortune.”
“Jonathan, if I remember right, don’t you already have one like this?” Florence suddenly recalled.
She thought she’d seen something similar before, though porcelain wasn’t really her interest, so she hadn’t paid it much mind.
“That’s right. The one in my collection is almost identical,” Jonathan confirmed.
Hearing this, a pleased smile touched Arabella’s lips. It seemed her judgment had been right -it really was something special.
After a moment’s thought, she asked, “Dad, how much do you think a vase like this could sell for?”
“You want to sell it?” Jonathan’s brow furrowed slightly, and he looked at her with concern.

“Well, you said it’s valuable. Shouldn’t I sell it then?” Arabella replied matter–of–factly.
“Arabella, it’s not easy to come across something this well–preserved. It would be a shame to let it go so soon.
“My advice would be to hold onto it for now. Pieces like this hold their value and there will always be buyers later on,” Jonathan suggested gently.
“Well, Dad, I don’t really have a good place to keep something like this at my place. Could I leave it here with you for now? When I decide to sell it, I’ll let you know,” Arabella said smoothly.
Of course she knew it was a rare piece. What shed said earlier was just a way to offer it to him without making it obvious.
She had already given him one gift today, and if she presented this vase as another, she knew he’d politely refuse. This way felt more natural.
Jonathan considered it, then nodded. “Alright, that sounds reasonable. I’ll keep it safe for you here, and whenever you’re ready, you can take it back.”
“Thank you–I’ll leave it in your care,” Arabella said, smiling at him warmly.
Just then, Naomi came back down the stairs holding a neatly wrapped box.
Walking over to Arabella, she smiled brightly. “Here you go–this is something I picked out just for you. Why don’t you open it?”
She held the box out to Arabella.
Arabella glanced at the packaging and immediately recognized the logo–it was from her own design studio.
A quick look at the item code told her exactly which piece it was–one of her earlier, simpler designs.
She couldn’t help but frown slightly and didn’t ach for it right away.
Colton… how many of my early pieces did he sell to the Hamilton family? I really need to tell him to send some of the newer collections their way next time.
Noticing Arabella’s hesitation, Florence thought she might be unsure about accepting it. Not wanting Naomi to feel awkward, she gently prompted, “Arabella, Naomi went through the trouble of getting you something. Why don’t you take it?”
Reminded, Arabella slowly accepted the box, bu instead of opening it, she set it aside on the sofa.

From the code alone, she already knew what was inside.
Naomi watched, a flicker of disappointment crossing her face.

Why isn’t she opening it? If she opened it now, Mom and Dad would see it’s a genuine, expensive piece.
“Mom, I’m actually getting kind of hungry. What’s for dinner later?” Arabella asked, changing the subject casually.
“What would you like to have?” Florence asked, her tone affectionate.
“How about crab?” Arabella suggested after a moment.
“Perfect. I’ll have some fresh ones delivered right away,” Florence said, pulling out her phone to send a quick text.
“They’ll be here soon. If you’re really hungry now, why not have a snack first?”
“Alright.”
Florence stood to fetch something from the kitchen.
“So, Arabella… aren’t you going to open it? Don’t you like it?” Naomi pressed, a hint of challenge in her tone.
“I haven’t even opened it yet–how would I know if I like it or not?” Arabella replied, her voice relaxed.
The truth was, she saw no point in opening a box whose contents she already knew.
“Well then, open it and see,” Naomi urged, not letting it go.
