Frank turned to Jonathan. “What did Arabella ge for you, Dad?”

Unlike other gifts, items from auctions still piqued Frank’s interest.

“A calligraphy piece by Master Laird,” Jonathan replied, his satisfaction evident.

Hearing the name “Laird“, Frank’s brows drew together slightly. “Laird… His work doesn’t come up at auction often.” He looked curiously at Arabella. “Which auction house was it?”

“I went to Hilde’s,” Arabella answered.

“Hilde’s?” Frank murmured, a faint frown appearing. “I didn’t hear about an auction there today.” He picked up his phone to check, then let out a soft sigh as he set it back down.

Noticing his shift in mood, Naomi asked gently, Frank, what’s wrong? Why the sigh?”

“Nothing,” Frank replied. He’d been tied up with work and had missed the notification about Hilde’s event.

“Oh,” Naomi said softly, not pressing further when it was clear he didn’t want to elaborate.

“So, Arabella,” Frank continued, turning back to her, “aside from those two pieces, what else was featured today?” Even if he hadn’t been there, it was still interesting to hear about.

“Are you interested in auctions too, Frank?” Arabella asked, a little surprised.

“Frank loves auctions,” Florence explained with a smile. “Whenever he has a free weekend, he’s off to one of the high–end houses. He’s probably a bit sorry he missed Hilde’s today.”

Arabella nodded in understanding. “I see.”

“Yeah,” Frank acknowledged with a slight nod.

At that moment, Ruby leaned close to Naomi and whispered, just loud enough for her to hear, “Now she’s got another chance to show off. Too bad she didn’t get Frank a gift.

Naomi nudged Ruby gently under the table, signaling her to drop it.

“Well, today they had a kiln–glazed porcelain vase. I thought the coloration was quite striking.” Arabella began recounting some of the highlights.

“Sounds like I missed more than I thought,” Frank said, his regret clearer now.

“Honestly, it wasn’t as impressive in person. I think what I brought back has more character,”

“What do you usually look for at auctions, Frank” she asked. If he went often, he must have collected quite a few pieces over the years.

“I mostly follow my instincts. If something speaks to me, I’ll bid on it,” Frank explained.

“But from what you’ve described, I probably would’ve found a piece or two today,” he admitted.

Seeing that Frank genuinely seemed to wish he’d attended, Arabella glanced at Jonathan, then said, “Well, it’s not a total loss. I left a porcelain vase with Dad.

“You can take a look after lunch. If you like it, it’s yours,” she offered generously.

Frank had given her a plane, after all. Returning the gesture with a collectible felt only right.

Hearing this, Frank’s eyes showed a flicker of interest. He looked at Jonathan. “Dad, didn’t you already have one like that in your collection?”

“I do,” Jonathan confirmed. He hadn’t expected Arabella to find a nearly matching piece. Such items weren’t easy to come by, and he was already looking forward to examining it more closely.

“You didn’t put it away yet, did you, Dad?” Arabella asked.

“No, it’s still on the living room coffee table. We’ll go take a proper look after we eat,” Jonathan replied.

“Alright. Frank, have some crab first–Mom had it flown in fresh,” Arabella reminded him, noticing he hadn’t touched his plate yet.

“Flown–in crab,” Frank repeated, glancing at the generous, well–prepared portions on the table. It seemed Arabella’s craving had prompted a rather special delivery.

As they continued with lunch, a low, distinct rumble echoed from outside.

Ruby glanced toward the window. “Naomi, was that a car pulling up?”

“Sounded like it,” Naomi murmured, though she was too preoccupied with her own swirling thoughts to pay much attention to the arrival.

Then a tall figure in a tailored suit strode into the house.

Seeing everyone gathered in the dining room, he approached with a warm, easy smile. “Mom, Dad, I’m back.”
